A repeated cross‐sectional analysis of breastfeeding initiation rates in Ireland for two decades and 10 recommended priorities for improvement

open access: yesMaternal &Child Nutrition, Volume 19, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
In this study, we attempted to analyse the breastfeeding initiation rates over the last 20 years for Ireland's Mid‐West region. Furthermore, we attempted to appraise the impact of deprivation in the defined city areas and, through a narrative review, proposed 10 evidence‐based themes, the ‘10 Priorities’, to improve Irish breastfeeding rates.

Predicting Cloud Conditions in Substellar Mass Objects Using Ultracool Dwarf Companions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present results from conducting a theoretical chemical analysis of a sample of benchmark companion brown dwarfs whose primary star is of type F, G, or K.

Brown Dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1998
After a discussion of the physical processes in brown dwarfs, we present a complete, precise definition of brown dwarfs and of planets inspired by the internal physics of objects between 0.1 and 0.001 M_sun. We discuss observational techniques for characterizing low-luminosity objects as brown dwarfs, including the use of the lithium test and cooling ...

Fertilizer‐induced soil carbon rapidly disappears after clearcutting in boreal production forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
Overall, the carry‐over effects on biodiversity from forest fertilization into stands regenerating after clearcutting were limited. We conclude that soil organic carbon stores induced by fertilization are short‐lived and do not persist after clearcutting.

Fast‐growing annual plants drive disease spillover in multi‐host communities

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
Our modelling study predicts that slower‐growing hosts will bear the greater impact of pathogen spillover in the form of reduced end‐of‐season biomass (panel A). Faster‐growing hosts are predicted to be high impact reservoirs for spillover and could amplify disease in multi‐host communities (panel B).

Against interpretive exclusivism* Contre l'exclusivisme interprétatif

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
Interpretive exclusivism is the dogma that we can only understand cultural systems by interpreting them, thereby ruling out causal explanations of cultural phenomena using scientific methods, for example based on measurement, comparison, and experiment.
