Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

The WIRC+Pol Brown Dwarf Survey: A J-band Polarimetric Survey of 22 Brown Dwarfs

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a near-infrared spectropolarimetric survey of brown dwarfs conducted with the WIRC+Pol instrument on the Palomar 200 inch Hale Telescope. The primary survey goal was to investigate the presence of polarization signatures arising from cloudy ...

Pseudonyms, Propaganda, and Prints: The Life and Political Caricatures of William Dent, 1782–931

open access: yesJournal for Eighteenth-Century Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract ‘Dent was probably an amateur and nothing is known of his life’, state Bryant and Heneage. Despite contributing to caricature's ‘golden age’, William Dent remains overlooked compared to contemporaries like James Gillray. Dent's extensive portfolio (1782–93) and rumoured role as a Pittite propagandist have not secured his place in the canon of ...

Inspecting Cloudy Substellar Atmospheres with JWST MIRI Synthetic Magnitudes from Spitzer Mid-infrared Spectra

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We examine the positions of substellar objects in mid-infrared color–magnitude and color–color diagrams to distinguish between cloudy and cloud-free atmospheres.

Surprisingly Weak Magnetism on Young Accreting Brown Dwarfs

open access: yes, 2009
We have measured the surface magnetic flux on four accreting young brown dwarfs and one nonaccreting young very low mass (VLM) star utilizing high-resolution spectra of absorption lines of the FeH molecule.

Spectacle and Spy Stories: The 1954 Royal Commission on Espionage

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Politics &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Menzies government's 1954 royal commission, established to investigate Soviet espionage in Australia, is well known as the backdrop to the Labor Party split. It saw opposition leader H.V. Evatt's demise and ushered in an almost 20‐year period of Liberal Party governance.

The Polar Vortex Hypothesis: Evolving, Spectrally Distinct Polar Regions Explain Short- and Long-term Light-curve Evolution and Color–Inclination Trends in Brown Dwarfs and Giant Exoplanets

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Recent studies revealed viewing-angle-dependent color and spectral trends in brown dwarfs, as well as long-term photometric variability (∼100 hr). The origins of these trends are yet unexplained.

Australian Royal Commissions Into Child Welfare, Abuse and Protection

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Politics &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Both nationally and internationally, the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (RCIRCSA) is widely viewed as a remarkably successful public inquiry. Unlike many other commissions, it was stable, attracted little controversy, was highly regarded, and led to extensive legal, regulatory and policy reform ...

Phosphine Depletion in Brown Dwarf Atmospheres Explained due to Metal Phosphide Formation

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Phosphine (PH _3 ) is predicted to be the dominant phosphorus-bearing gas in cool substellar atmospheres, yet observations have revealed a puzzling pattern.
