From the various types of bioreactors discussed in the literature, only a few are actually used in industry. By far the majority of processes are performed in stirred tank bioreactors. Besides these standard reactors, only bubble columns or, more generally, airlift reactors reached a noticeable number of applications.

In this chapter the elementary hydrodynamic characteristics of simple bubble columns are summarized. Different designs of bubble columns are sketched, and examples of their industrial applications are outlined. An overview of the status on Eulerian bubble column modeling is presented.
