Rapid evaporation at the superheat limit [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
In an experimental investigation of the transient processes that occur when a single droplet of butane at the superheat limit vaporizes explosively, short-exposure photographs and fast-response pressure measurements have been used to construct a ...

Gourd‐Inspired Design of Unit Cell with Multiple Gradients for Physiological‐Range Pressure Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Gourd‐shaped micro‐dome arrays with coordinated modulus, conductivity, and geometric gradients co‐optimize sensitivity and linearity in piezoresistive tactile sensors. Under pressure, a solid upper dome embeds into a porous lower dome, triggering rapid contact‐area growth and series‐to‐parallel conduction, enabling unsaturated, intensity‐resolved ...

Comprehensive experimental investigation of counter-current bubble column hydrodynamics: Holdup, flow regime transition, bubble size distributions and local flow properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper, we apply a variety of experimental techniques to investigate the influence of the counter-current mode on bubble column hydrodynamics. We study an air-water bubble column, which is 5.3 m in height and has an inner diameter of 0.24 m, and ...

Liquid Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy: A Window into the Early Stages of Complex Material Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid‐phase transmission electron microscopy enables direct observation of nucleation and growth processes in solution. This review is dedicated to the remembrance of Helmut Cölfen and highlights recent studies on complex materials—oxides, biominerals, organic–inorganic crystals—which were central to his research activity. It summarizes key milestones,

Impact of Microalgae on CO2 Bubble Growth and Detachment in Bubble Column Bioreactor

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2015
The biological capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) using microalgae is a promising technology and has gained a huge momentum due to its environment-friendly, low cost and high CO2 fixation efficiency.

Influence of internals on counter-current bubble column hydrodynamics: Holdup, flow regime transition and local flow properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Bubble columns are frequently studied without considering internals (open tube bubble columns). However, in most industrial applications, internal devices are often added to control heat transfer, to foster bubble break-up or to limit liquid phase back ...

Unified modeling of bubbly flows in pipes, bubble columns, and airlift columns

open access: yesChemical Engineering Science, 2017
Abstract Multiphase CFD simulation is a valuable tool in process engineering which is particularly useful to study new reactor concepts and their scale-up from laboratory to production scale. Simulations of bubbly flows up to industrial dimensions are feasible within the Eulerian two-fluid framework of interpenetrating continua.

Bio‐Inspired Magnetically Tunable Structural Colors from Elliptical Self‐Assembled Block Copolymer Microparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cephalopod‐inspired photonic microparticles with dynamic structural coloration are fabricated via confined self‐assembly of linear block copolymers into ellipsoids containing stacked lamellae. Embedded superparamagnetic nanoparticles enable rapid magnetic alignment, restoring vivid, angle‐dependent color.

The Deuterium, Oxygen, and Nitrogen Abundance Toward LSE 44

open access: yes, 2005
We present measurements of the column densities of interstellar DI, OI, NI, and H2 made with FUSE, and of HI made with IUE toward the sdO star LSE 44, at a distance of 554+/-66 pc.
