Buckling of Langmuir Monolayers

Europhysics Letters (EPL), 1989
We show that under compression on a Langmuir trough, a surfactant monolayer may have a mechanical instability similar to the buckling instability of a beam or a plate. In the buckled state, the wavelength of the surface undulations is the capillary length resulting from the balance between gravity and curvature energy and is in the range of 104 A.

Buckling and Local Buckling of Tubular Members

2003
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses buckling and local buckling of tubular members. Local buckling of tubular members is investigated in this chapter, both theoretically and experimentally. Two types of buckling mode are observed, which are denoted as a cosine mode and a dent mode. In this chapter, however, an attempt has been made to predict the

Elastic Stability, Buckling and Post-Buckling Behaviour

1981
Elastic stability is perhaps the oldest topic in finite elasticity theory. Stability in the sense of Lyapunov is essentially a dynamic concept. Dynamics of continuous media find their proper place under the wings of thermodynamics. The thermodynamic foundation of the theory of elastic stability is now fairly secure, thanks to Duhem and Ericksen.

Buckling and Post-buckling of Curved Beams and Rings

2017
The buckling and post-buckling of curved beams under mechanical distributed and concentrated loads and thermal loads with different types of boundary conditions are discussed in detail in this chapter. The existence of bifurcation points are examined for each type of loading.

Buckling and Post-buckling of Circular/Annular Plates

2017
The stability of circular and annular plates under mechanical and thermal loads are presented in this chapter. The chapter begins with the presentation of the strain-displacement relations based on the von Karman and Kirchhoff assumptions employing the classical plate theory. The linear thermoelastic constitutive relations between the stress and strain
