Buckling of Bars

2011
Objectives: In this chapter we analyse the stability of equilibrium positions of bars under compressive loads. Methods are presented which will enable us to determine the so-called critical load under which a bar deflects due to buckling. The aim is to enable students to apply the appropriate methods in order to determine critical loads.

Buckling instabilities in cholesterics

Journal of Applied Physics, 1982
Quantitative measurements on the threshold of mechanically induced buckling instabilities are presented. We report the data obtained by light scattering experiments, and by optical spectroscopy measurements. We verify de Gennes’ model for this instability qunatitatively, in analogy with the smectic A case, obtaining an equivalent penetration length of ...

Mechanical and thermal buckling loads of rectangular FG plates by using higher-order unified formulation

Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures, 2019
In this paper, by using the Carrera unified formulation, a higher-order plate theory, in the framework of FEM, the mechanical and thermal buckling loads of functionally graded (FG) plates have been formulated by linearized buckling analysis.

Buckling of circumferentially corrugated cylindrical shells under uniform external pressure

Ships and Offshore Structures, 2019
The paper focuses on the buckling of circumferentially corrugated cylindrical shells under uniform external pressure, along with the effects of corrugation on the buckling. The buckling of unstiffened and corrugated cylindrical shells are studied using a

Thermoelastic buckling and post-buckling of weakened columns

Structures, 2015
Abstract Structural columns in engineering practice may weaken over time as a result of corrosion, erosion, impact, fatigue cracking or similar effects that reduce their effective cross-section. The effect of the degradation of the cross-section may then lead to premature flexural buckling.

Buckling and Post-buckling Characteristics of Pressure-Loaded Cylinders

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1993
Nonlinear Ritz analysis is used to investigate the elastic buckling behavior of pressure loaded cylinders. Careful analysis of the energy changes during the buckling process allows definition of a reduced stiffness theoretical model. This reduced stiffness model provides a convenient means for estimating lower bounds to the imperfection sensitive ...

Suprachoroidal Buckling

2014
To evaluate the feasibility of suprachoroidal buckling procedure using a suprachoroidal catheter, or cannula, as a new approach to treating different forms of retinal detachment, including myopic traction maculopathy, myopic macular holes, and peripheral retinal breaks by creating a suprachoroidal indentation (buckling effect) using a suprachoroidal ...
