Highly Nonlinear Solitary Waves for Rail Buckling Prevention [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
One of the major structural problems in the railroads made of continuous welded rails is buckling in hot weather and breakage or pulling apart in cold weather.

Thin plate buckling mitigation and reduction challenges for naval ships

open access: yes, 2013
Thin plate buckling or distortion on ship structures is an ongoing issue for shipbuilders. It has been identified that a significant number of factors can be put in place based on prior knowledge and good practice.

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

Buckling analysis of planar compression micro-springs

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2015
Large compression deformation causes micro-springs buckling and loss of load capacity. We analyzed the impact of structural parameters and boundary conditions for planar micro-springs, and obtained the change rules for the two factors that affect ...

Self‐Assembled Inorganic Nanomembrane Tubes: Rolled‐Up Piezoelectrics for Microacoustic Wave‐Based Actuators and Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a self‐assembly process to generate free‐standing piezoelectric nanomembranes, forming ultracompact microtubular acoustic wave sensors and actuators. The miniaturized 3D piezoelectric platform reported in this work can be applied in telecommunication, energy harvesting, and acoustofluidics. Moreover, the 3D self‐assembly can add

Large-scale buckling-constrained topology optimization based on assembly-free finite element analysis

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2017
In this article, we propose a fast method to solve large-scale three-dimensional topology optimization problems subject to buckling constraints. Buckling analysis entails the solution of a generalized eigenvalue problem.

Numerical analysis of the effect of torispherical head on the buckling of pressure vessel

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 2014
The shape of end heads of a pressure vessel is usually torispherical. Buckling of this head is one of the most important points for designing of pressure vessels. This subject has been studied extensively since last years. In this field, the experimental

Limit-point buckling analyses using solid, shell and solid–shell elements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper, the recently-developed solid-shell element SHB8PS is used for the analysis of a representative set of popular limit-point buckling benchmark problems.

Programmable 3D Photovoltaics via Mechanically Origami‐Coded Interlocked 3D Kirigami and Nano‐Root Anchored AgNWs–In–Ga Multiphasic Alloy Conductor

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Mechanically origami‐coded 3D kirigami photovoltaics convert a single extension–release cycle into deterministic self‐folding, reconfiguring planar solar cells into programmable 3D modules. Distinct coding strategies enable either ultrahigh stretchability (500% system strain) or ultrahigh initial effective areal coverage (225%).
