Molecularly Dissipative Liquid Crystal Elastomer Foams for Impact and Vibration Attenuation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid crystal elastomer foams integrate cellular deformation with mesogen reorientation to create a dual‐scale energy dissipation mechanism. Progressive pore collapse absorbs mechanical loads, while stress‐induced mesogen reorientation provides additional damping, resulting in reduced impact transmission and broadband suppression of vibrational ...

Stochastic behavior of nanoscale dielectric wall buckling [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Physics, 2016
The random buckling patterns of nanoscale dielectric walls are analyzed using a nonlinear multi-scale stochastic method that combines experimental measurements with simulations. The dielectric walls, approximately 200 nm tall and 20 nm wide, consist of compliant, low dielectric constant (low-k) fins capped with stiff, compressively stressed TiN lines ...

GeS as an Emerging OTS Material: Atomic Structure and Modeling of ON/OFF Switching

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The structural puzzle of glassy GeS, an advanced memory‐selector material, has finally been disentangled, revealing a patchwork of mixed tetrahedral and trigonal species. Under a high electric field, over‐ and under‐coordinated Ge and S defects, together with three‐membered rings, form an interconnected network associated with localized and extended ...

A nonlocal sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory with application to bending, buckling, and vibration of nanobeams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper presents a nonlocal sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory for the bending, buckling, and vibration of nanobeams. The present model is capable of capturing both small scale effect and transverse shear deformation effects of nanobeams, and ...

Emergence of a Hexagonal Fe2S2 Single Layer Without a Bulk Counterpart via Phase Transformation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Upon annealing, single‐layer Mackinawite iron sulfide transforms into a previously unknown hexagonal Fe2S2${\rm Fe}_2{\rm S}_2$ phase with β$\beta$‐CuI structure. STM, LEED, and first‐principles calculations identify the structure and show that electronic correlations and magnetic order are important for its stability.

The Instability Improvement of the Symmetric Angle-Ply and Cross-Ply Composite Plates with Shape Memory Alloy Using Finite Element Method

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2014
Shape memory alloy (SMA) wires were embedded within laminated composite plates to take advantage of the shape memory effect property of the SMA in improving post-buckling behavior of composite plates.

Buckling and post-buckling behavior of auxetic cellular structures

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications
In this work, experimental tests and numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the buckling behavior and failure modes of auxetic cellular structures and sandwich panels with auxetic cores. Different Poisson's ratios and densities are considered to evaluate the impact of these parameters on the deformation mechanisms under uniaxial ...

Bistable Isochoric Chiral Metamaterials with Reprogrammable Multiaxial Responses

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An isochoric bistable rotational unit cell enables in situ modification of internal contact conditions post‐fabrication, without altering the global envelope dimensions of the surrounding architecture. By selectively switching between open and closed states, the tessellated chiral metamaterial can reprogram its volumetric response, including bulk ...
