Buckling Loads for Stepped Columns

Journal of the Structural Division, 1964
The formulation of exact characteristic buckling load equations for ideal stepped columns is shown. The method is based on the three-step moment equation. This expression, analogous to the well-known three-moment equation, relates the bending moments at three adjacent steps of a slightly buckled column.

Bounding of Frame Buckling Loads

Journal of the Structural Division, 1970
Frame stability calculations are recast into the form of a low order, nonlinear eigenvlaue problem. It is shown that at each stage of the iterative solution of the problem, upper and lower bounds on the sway buckling load are established. The conditions needed for convergence and bounding are examined and verified by several numerical problems.

Buckling Loads of Columns with Varying Cross Sections

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1989
A new numerical method is presented for evaluating the buckling loads of columns with varying cross sections. By this method, the traditional eigenvalue problem is transformed into a special initial value problem, and the buckling loads of the columns can be evaluated by an iteration procedure, which is to satisfy the boundary conditions specified in ...

Secondary Buckling of Compression-Loaded Composite Plates

AIAA Journal, 1996
The phenomenon is described of secondary buckling in plates that are clamped along the loaded edges and simply supported and stiffened along the adjacent unloaded edges. An experiment is described that is used to study secondary buckling of plates with these boundary conditions.

Both Bounds to Buckling Loads and Fundamental Frequencies

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1994
A simple procedure for improving the Krylov-Bogolyubov-Weinstein-Isaacson-Keller (KBWIK) lower bound and the Rayleigh upper bound to the first eigenvalue is described and illustrated by examples. The procedure makes use of the method of successive approximations, the Rayleigh-Schwarz quotients, the Krylov-Bogolyubov enclosure theorem, and the Temple ...

Buckling Behavior Above the Tangent Modulus Load

Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1961
Inelastic buckling behavior of concentrically loaded strut having reduced rectangular cross section as mid-section; buckling model is similar to that originally used by F.R.Shanley, but in present model, solid rectangular cross section is introduced which permits detailed exploration of stress distribution across section; influence of slight ...

Design sensitivity analysis of non-linear buckling load

Computational Mechanics, 1988
This paper describes three procedures for calculating design derivatives of the nonlinear critical load. Constraints on the critical load arise naturally in optimal design of structures having nonlinear behavior. The incremental procedures used for nonlinear analysis can fail before reaching the final load level due to buckling or collapse of the ...

Determination of the Buckling Load for Columns of Variable Stiffness

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1949
Abstract A method is given for determining both upper and lower bounds on the critical or buckling load for variable-section columns with axial loading. This method, which is an extension of the Rayleigh principle, is illustrated by three examples.

ON DEFORMATIONS OF ELASTIC COLUMNS NEAR THE BUCKLING LOAD

The Quarterly Journal of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, 1966
