An imbedding method for buckling loads

open access: yesComputers & Mathematics with Applications, 1975
AbstractAn imbedding method for determining the critical length of buckling columns is presented. The method can be applied to a large class of problems and requires the integration of only one initial value equation. Integration proceeds until the integral becomes excessively large, indicating that the critical length has been reached. Alternately the

Quasi‐Static to Supersonic Energy Absorption of Nanoarchitected Tubulanes and Schwarzites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoarchitected energy‐absorptive Tubulanes exhibit record energy absorption under quasi‐static conditions and exceptional inelastic energy dissipation under 750 m s−1 ballistics impact, with high performance spanning strain rates of 12 orders of magnitude.

Nonlinear buckling analysis of tower crane structure based on movable boundaries

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2022
The tower crane is a typical soaring and complex frame structure, and buckling is an important factor affecting its safety and carrying capacity. Considering the special characteristics of the boundary conditions for the boom structure, a numerical ...

Lower buckling load in the non-linear buckling theory for thin shells [PDF]

open access: yesQuarterly of Applied Mathematics, 1947
For thin shells the relation between the load P and the deflection e beyond the classical buckling load is very often non-linear. For instance, when a uniform thin circular cylinder is loaded in the axial direction, the load P when plotted against the end-shortening e has the characteristic shown in Fig. 1.

Conductive Bonding and System Architectures for High‐Performance Flexible Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review outlines bonding technologies and structural design strategies that support high‐performance flexible and stretchable electronics. Bonding approaches such as surface‐activated bonding and anisotropic conductive films, together with system‐level architectures including buffer layers and island‐bridge structures, possess distinct mechanical ...

Finite element studies on buckling of laminated cylindrical skew panels

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2014
The present paper presents the finite element studies made on critical buckling load of isotropic and laminated composite cylindrical skew panels. Analysis is performed using CQUAD4 and CQUAD8 elements of MSC/NASTRAN.

Combined compressive and shear buckling analysis of hypersonic aircraft structural sandwich panels [PDF]

open access: yes
The combined-load (compression and shear) buckling equations were established for orthotropic sandwich panels by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method to minimize the panel total potential energy.

MAGTWIST: A Magnetically‐Driven Rotary Actuator Using a Traveling‐Wave With Integrated Stiffness Tunability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.

Uncertainty in Loading and Control of an Active Column Critical to Buckling

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2012
Buckling of load-carrying column structures is an important design constraint in light-weight structures as it may result in the collapse of an entire structure.
