Two types of bouts are found: short bouts with no predictable temporal pattern and long bouts with some degree of periodic occurrence. Transitions in long bouts are mostly based on anatomical proximity.

Adenocarcinoma of the kidney in two budgerigars
Avian Pathology, 1984Two female budgerigars with kidney tumours are described. They both had a history of gradual emaciation. One bird also had abdominal distention and a paralysed left leg. Histologically, the tumours appeared to be adenocarcinomas. The occurrence and histological appearance of kidney tumours in budgerigars are compared to findings of other authors.

A Viral Disease of Fledgling Budgerigars
Avian Diseases, 1981Fledgling budgerigars from aviaries in Georgia and Texas were reported to have high rates of mortality. Affected birds died acutely and exhibited abdominal distention and reddening of the skin. Postmortem lesions were hydropericardium, enlarged heart and liver with areas of necrosis, and swollen, congested kidneys.
