Land cover and water yield: inference problems when comparing catchments with mixed land cover [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2012
Controlled experiments provide strong evidence that changing land cover (e.g. deforestation or afforestation) can affect mean catchment streamflow (<i>Q</i>).

Nonlinear control of climate, hydrology, and topography on streamflow response through the use of interpretable machine learning across the contiguous United States

open access: yesJournal of Water and Climate Change, 2023
Runoff has been greatly affected by climate change and human activities. Studying nonlinear controls on runoff response is of great significance for water resource management decision-making and ecological protection.

Budyko Curve Conformance Unravelling Hydrological Change in a Semi‐Arid Mediterranean‐Climate River Basin

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 9, September 2026.
This study applies an integration of Budyko diagnostics, change‐point detection, and dual attribution methods to the Gediz River Basin, revealing a major 1984 regime shift. Streamflow decline is driven mainly (50%–75%) by reduced precipitation, with secondary human impacts.

Changing Water Resources in the Indus Basin: A Multi‐Model Budyko‐Based Analysis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue 11, September 2026.
Budyko‐based analysis evaluates historical (1962–2005) and future hydroclimatic change across the Indus River Basin. Budyko shifts indicate rising atmospheric evaporative demand and increasing energy limitation under future scenarios. ABSTRACT Assessing hydroclimatic variability and future water availability is crucial for sustainable water‐resource ...

From Past to Future: Overall Patterns, Nonlinear Relationships, Spatial Heterogeneity and Drivers of Ecosystem Service Trade‐Offs and Synergies in the Yangtze River Economic Belt

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, Volume 37, Issue 15, Page 11322-11345, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Land‐use change and climate change are reshaping watershed ecological functions and may intensify the risk of localized ecological degradation. However, existing studies have primarily focused on the spatiotemporal patterns of ecosystem services (ESs) during historical periods, while the nonlinear changes, spatial heterogeneity, and driving ...

Exploring the relationships between warm-season precipitation, potential evaporation, and “apparent” potential evaporation at site scale [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2018
Bouchet's complementary relationship and the Budyko hypothesis are two classic frameworks that are inter-connected. To systematically investigate the connections between the two frameworks, we analyze precipitation, pan evaporation, and potential ...

Enhanced Dry Season Moisture Recycling in the Congo and Amazon Rainforests

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The rainforests of South America and Africa are considerably reliant on rainfall supplied by evaporation from the rainforests themselves through moisture recycling. Thus, rainforest loss in these areas can reduce evaporation as well as subsequent rainfall in the wider forested region.

Uneven Responses of Regional Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Turnover Time to Stratospheric Aerosol Injection

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) is one of the alternative approaches to counteract anthropogenic warming by introducing reflective aerosols into the stratosphere. SAI‐induced surface cooling and altered hydrological cycle have been widely investigated.

Attributing Runoff and Non‐Point Source Pollution Changes to Climate and Human Drivers in the Weihe River Basin, China

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Climate change and human activities jointly affect runoff generation and non‐point source pollutant transport in river basins. Quantifying their relative roles is essential for explaining pollutant‐load changes and informing water resources management. Here, this study developed an integrated framework combining Budyko runoff attribution, Soil

Understanding the Budyko Equation

open access: yes, 2017
The Budyko equation has achieved iconic status in hydrology for its concise and accurate representation of the relationship between annual evapotranspiration and long-term-average water and energy balance at catchment scales.
