Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting With TiO2 Thin Films: Effects of Thickness, Porosity, and Illumination Configuration

An increase in surface area is not always an advantage for photoanodes; mesoporous TiO2 photoelectrodes present lower photoelectrocatalytic performance in oxygen evolution reaction due to a higher density of surface states that promote recombination, especially under frontal illumination.
