Investigation of cytotoxic effect of the bufanolide steroid compound cinobufagin and its related underlying mechanism in brain cell models

Journal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology, 2021
AbstractCinobufagin, a bufadienolide of toad venom of Bufo bufo gargarizans, is used as a cardiotonic, central nervous system (CNS) respiratory agent, as well as an analgesic and anesthetic. However, several research showed that bufadienolide has a few side effects on the CNS, such as breathlessness or coma.

Bufalin, a bufanolide steroid from the parotoid glands of the Chinese toad, suppresses hERG K+ currents expressed in HEK293 cells

Fundamental & Clinical Pharmacology, 2017
AbstractIn this study, we investigated the effect of bufalin on the human ether‐à‐go‐go‐related gene (hERG) K+ channels using the perforated patch recording technique. We measured a half‐maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 24.83 μM and maximal inhibitory effect of 39.45 ± 1.14% with bufalin. These findings suggest that bufalin is a potent hERG K+

Bufalin, a bufanolide steroid from the parotoid glands of the Chinese toad, inhibits L‐type Ca2+ channels and contractility in rat ventricular myocytes

Fundamental & Clinical Pharmacology, 2017
AbstractBufalin is a bufanolide steroid compound in Chan Su. Chan Su is a traditional Chinese medicine prepared from the dried white secretion of the auricular and skin glands of toads and has been used as an oriental drug. However, the effect of bufalin on cardiac function and its underlying cellular mechanisms remain unclear.
