AbstractA study of the ultrastructure and function of the paraphysis in Bufo bufo larvae was carried out. The structure is a tubular‐ramified gland made up of numerous tubules with monolayered epithelial walls surrounded by connective tissue and sinusoids.

Regulation of thyroid function in the toad Bufo bufo

Abstract After extirpation of the pars distalis of the hypophysis in the toad, I 131 uptake of thyr thyroid gland declined to about 40% of the normal value. Injection of a macerate of the pars distalis into the operated toads restored the iodine uptake to control values.

Susceptibility to motion sickness was tested by exposing free moving toads to rotation of a stimulator modeled after an amusement park Ferris Wheel. The stimulator provided a gentle stimulation of frequency 0.25 Hz and centrifugal acceleration 0.143 g during 120 min or more without external visual cues.

The fine structure of the juxtaglomerular apparatus in the toad, Bufo bufo was investigated.—It is suggested that the granules in the media cells of the afferent arteriole are formed from the Golgi apparatus. Many granules have a content of lamellar material. The media cells do not show the ultrastructural features of active secretory cells.
