Axoplasmic transport in the toad Bufo marinus

The rate and course of axoplasmic transport from the eighth dorsal root ganglion cell bodies into the sciatic nerve of the toad Bufo marinus were studied. Concentrated tritiated proline was hydraulically injected into a surgically exposed dorsal root ganglion of animals maintained at 19 +/- 0.5 degrees C.

Spontaneous chromomycosis in the marine toad (Bufo marinus)

Post-mortem examinations were performed on two marine toads, one animal showing neurological disorders and the other multifocal dermatitis. In one case, lesions consisted of a severe granulomatous encephalomyelitis and in the other of multiple granulomas in the nasal cavity, lungs, heart, bone marrow, ovaries and skin.

Renal vascular anatomy of the toad (Bufo marinus)

The renal vasculature of the toad, Bufo marinus, was studied mainly by means of scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. All arterial branches terminated in a glomerulus. Each glomerulus was supplied by only one afferent arteriole. No shunts between afferent and efferent arterioles were observed.

Microbodies (peroxisomes), a group of cytoplasmic organelles enriched in catalase, are demonstrated in the toad, Bufo marinus, by light and electron microscopy by means of a cytochemical staining procedure that demonstrates the peroxidatic activity of catalase with diaminobenzidine (DAB).

Prolactin, calcitonin and blood calcium in the toads Bufo boreas and Bufo marinus

Abstract Bufo boreas and B. marinus show a hypocalcemic response to a single injection of porcine calcitonin (significant in the latter). Chronic treatment results in hypercalcemia. Ovine prolactin treatment results in a tendency toward hypercalcemia in all cases, which was not significant in any single experiment.
