Serological relationships of frogs (Ranidae) and toads (Bufonidae)

Neopalatine Odontoids in Bufo alvarius (Anura: Bufonidae)
Journal of Herpetology, 1998The lack of teeth among all species in the family Bufonidae is considered a synapomorphy to support the monophyly of this nearly cosmopolitan group (Ford and Cannatella, 1993; Graybeal and Cannatella, 1995). Odontoids occur in many frogs (e.g., the mandible of the hylid Hemiphractus; Shaw, 1989) but are simple tooth-like projections of bone and, thus ...

Molecular systematics of African 20-chromosome toads (Anura: Bufonidae)
Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2004Intrageneric lineages and the historical biogeography of toads, genus Bufo, are poorly resolved due to their conservative morphology, their highly conserved karyotypes (typically 2N = 22), and erratic patterns of interspecific hybridisation. Here, we use mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data to reconstruct relationships of the 20-chromosome toads,

A New Toad (Anura: Bufonidae) from Uruguay
Journal of Herpetology, 2004A new species of toad is described from small streams in the hills of Cuchilla de Haedo and Cuchilla Grande in northeastern Uruguay. Specimens of the new species were previously mistaken for Bufo arenarum; they differ from B. arenarum by having elongated parotoid glands and reddish-brown parotoid and cephalic crests. A discriminant analysis resulted in

The Native Toads (Anura, Bufonidae) of Hispaniola
Journal of Herpetology, 1972A new subspecies of Bufo guntheri and a new species of Bufo are described from Hispaniola. Comparisons of the new species are made with the remaining 8 native Antillean species, its relationships are discussed, and data on call, calling site, and distribution are given.
