The potential of building envelope greening to achieve quietness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Reduction of noise is one of the multiple benefits of building envelope greening measures. The potential of wall vegetation systems, green roofs, vegetated low screens at roof edges, and also combinations of such treatments, have been studied by means of

The natural reduction of threat in selected systems of old buildings containing asbestos

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The aim of this study was to measure changes in asbestos dust concentrations over extended use in old building systems. Buildings from different systems during their service lifetimes and after asbestos removal were tested.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Alumina: Effects of Scanning Strategies on External and Internal Defects

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates how scanning strategies affect pure alumina in laser powder bed fusion. Linear 45° scanning yields uniform surfaces but high porosity, while the island‐concentric strategy provides higher density with through‐holes favorable for infiltration. Findings highlight pathways toward optimizing defect‐free alumina parts.

Acoustical assessment of urban residential environment

open access: yesBudownictwo i Architektura, 2014
The quality of urban residential environment depends on several factors, acoustical conditions are among the most important. Outdoor noise affects conditions inside the building, determines required sound insulation of external walls and the whole ...

An Archaeoacoustics Analysis of Cistercian Architecture: The Case of the Beaulieu Abbey

open access: yesAcoustics, 2021
The Cistercian order is of acoustic interest because previous research has hypothesized that Cistercian architectural structures were designed for longer reverberation times in order to reinforce Gregorian chants.

Air‐Pressure–Actuated Vibroacoustic Metamaterial With Tunable Bandgap: Design, Modeling, and Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents the design, modeling, and characterization of air‐pressure–actuated programmable vibroacoustic metamaterials (PVAMM). The study focuses on leveraging air pressure to dynamically tune resonance frequencies for effective noise attenuation.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Project ancient acoustics part 3 of 4 : Influence of geometrical and material assumptions on ray-based acoustic simulations of two ancient theatres [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Acoustic models of ancient theatres found in literature are often based on assumptions, both for geometrical and material properties. The influences of these assumptions on modelling results have been assessed in this paper, which is part of the Ancient ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Dynamic Optimisation of Façade-Integrated Solar Cooling Elements: Adsorption Cooling Versus Photovoltaic Scenarios

open access: yesSolar
Façade-integrated solar cooling technologies enable the utilisation of façade surface potential and the provision of resilient cooling. This work compares three solar cooling scenarios, positioning a solar cooling element in the west and east façades ...
