From Biomimicry to Climate-Responsive Architecture: Prioritizing Bio-Based and Bio-Inspired Strategies for Sustainable Buildings in Tropical Monsoon Climates

open access: yesBuildings
Bio-inspired and bio-based materials are increasingly recognized as powerful enablers of climate-responsive and low-carbon architecture. By learning from natural systems, such as adaptability, self-regulation, and resource efficiency, these materials ...

Synergistic perspectives—How single‐molecule biophysics complement biochemical understanding

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how ensemble biochemistry and single‐molecule approaches are complementary, outline commonly used single‐molecule techniques, and illustrate their relevance through two representative case studies: chromatin organization by SMC complexes and pathway choice during DNA double‐strand break repair.

Atlas of spatial distribution for energy demand and thermal comfort estimation in Algeria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Climatic spatial maps are essential for understanding the thermal conditions of cities and estimate their cooling and heating energy needs. In this atlas, seven high-resolution maps that estimates and visualize the discomfort hours and cooling/heating ...

A Critical Review of Energy Consumption in Libyan Residential Buildings: Addressing Knowledge Gaps in Design, Materials, Construction Practices, and Occupant Behaviour

open access: yesBuildings
Residential buildings have been responsible for the increasing percentage of final energy consumption in Libya, which is mainly due to the cooling of buildings in hot arid climatic conditions, but there is still a constant discrepancy between the ...

Translophagy—A potential link between autophagy impairment and translational errors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterised by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and protein aggregates, but their origin often remains unknown. We propose that selective autophagy removes damaged protein‐making machinery, preventing errors during protein synthesis.

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Utilizing Building Automation Systems for Indoor Environmental Quality Optimization: A Review of the Current Literature, Challenges, and Opportunities

open access: yesBuildings
Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) plays a vital role in occupant health and productivity. However, current Building Management Systems (BMS) often struggle in sustaining optimal IEQ levels due to limitations in data management and lack of occupant ...

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...
