Numerical simulation on the water entry of bow-flare section considering bulbous bow
Ocean Engineering, 2020Abstract The hydrodynamic problem of bow-flare section entering into water was studied through the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. A two-phase compressible flow model was established based on N–S equations and modeled by VOF (Volume of Fluid) algorithm.

Practical Hydrodynamic Design of Bulbous Bows for Ships
Naval Engineers Journal, 2005Although in modern times, bulbous bows have become an integral part of commercial ships, the hydrodynamic design of bulbous bows is still difficult because of costly tank tests and patent-driven knowledge banks. The design of a bulbous bow is needed even at the preliminary design level to predict speed and power.

Parametric Method Using Grasshopper for Bulbous Bow Generation
2018 International Conference on Computing, Electronics & Communications Engineering (iCCECE), 2018Green ship technology is increasingly important in different areas of ship design. Hydrodynamic optimization shape design is an integral part of the overall fuel economy design. To get the optimal design, the geometry modification of ship takes extremely important place in an optimization loop.

Validation of Bulbous Bow Optimisation by Viscous CFD
Volume 11: Prof. Robert F. Beck Honoring Symposium on Marine Hydrodynamics, 2015In this paper the authors attempt to validate the use of CFD in bulbous bow optimisation studies using two separate data sets. Based on the first data set a comparison is made between results derived using both RANSE CFD and Potential Flow. It is shown that the relative ranking of hull designs will be substantially different, as a result of the ...

Retrofitting of Bulbous Bows on U.S. Navy Auxiliary and Amphibious Warships
Naval Engineers Journal, 1984ABSTRACTTo meet energy conservation goals of the U.S. Navy, its attention has been focused on ways to reduce individual ship total resistance and powering requirements. One possible method of improving ship powering characteristics is by modifying existing individual ship hulls with the addition of bulbous bows.

Effect of Bulbous Bow on Ice Resistance of Ice Ship
The Journal of Ocean, Mechanical and Aerospace -science and engineering- (JOMAse), 2018Ice resistance is very important in design of an ice ship due to related to the propulsion system. Bulbous bow ship economically has advantage during sailing in open water due to lower resistance compared with an ice bow. On the other hand, the bulbous bow ship has higher ice resistance due to bulbous bow.

Influence of bulbous bow structures on their collision behaviour
2011The authors are currently engaged in a collaborative research project which-amongst others-deals with the comparison of different bulbous bows and side structures. Their corresponding effects on collision will be investigated. This paper will give a short overview of the background and starting phase of the project.

ANALYSIS OF THE BULBOUS BOW ON SIMPLE SHIPS
1962Abstract : The mathematical expression of the wave resistance of a conventional ship is extremely complicated. Except for the special cases of very low or very high Froude numbers it is necessary to integrate a highly oscillating function numerically. And it is extremely difficult to investigate the effect of varying parameters in the wave resistance ...

Numerical optimization of a hull form with bulbous bow
2011A genetic algorithm technique has been applied to deal with the hydrodynamic optimization of a hull form with bulbous bow. A non interactive procedure has been developed to minimize the objective function, related to the flow past a ship moving with steady forward speed in calm water. The paper discusses the application of the genetic algorithm coupled

Some warship bulbous bow and stern wedge investigations
1988A conventional frigate hullform was modified by the addition of four bow bulbs (herein distinguished from bow sonar domes) and three stern wedges with three different angles. All designs were tested, singly or as combinations of bulbs and wedges, for resistance in still water and three, the basis form and two bow bulb variants, were tested in regular ...
