Chemical similarities between Galactic bulge and local thick disk red giant stars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The evolution of the Milky Way bulge and its relationship with the other Galactic populations is still poorly understood. The bulge has been suggested to be either a merger-driven classical bulge or the product of a dynamical instability of the inner ...

Formation of S0 galaxies through mergers. Bulge-disc structural coupling resulting from major mergers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Observations reveal a strong structural coupling between bulge and disc in S0 galaxies, which seems difficult to explain if they have formed from supposedly catastrophic events such as major mergers.

Stellar populations of classical and pseudo-bulges for a sample of isolated spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAp&SS, 337, 719 (2012), 2011
In this paper we present the stellar population synthesis results for a sample of 75 bulges in isolated spiral Sb-Sc galaxies, using the spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the STARLIGHT code. We find that both pseudo-bulges and classical bulges in our sample are predominantly composed of old stellar populations, with mean mass ...

Applicability of the Bulge Equations in plane strain bulge experiments [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2010
The bulge equations are based on the assumption that the membrane deflects to an ideal cylindrical shape. But for low stresses and/or thick films the membrane is better described with a Double Clamped Plate (DCP) solution. The goal is then to assess when the bulge test experiment can accurately be described with an ideal cylindrical shape. Furthermore,

Structural Properties of Pseudo-Bulges, Classical Bulges and Elliptical Galaxies: an SDSS Perspective [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We have performed 2D bulge/bar/disc decompositions using g, r and i-band images of a representative sample of nearly 1000 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We show that the Petrosian concentration index is a better proxy for bulge-to-total ratio than the global Sersic index.

Box- and peanut-shaped bulges: I. Statistics [PDF]

open access: yesA&AS 145, 405 (2000), 2000
We present a classification for bulges of a complete sample of ~1350 edge-on disk galaxies derived from the RC3 (Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991). A visual classification of the bulges using the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) in three types of b/p bulges or as an elliptical type is presented and supported by CCD ...

The tension at the top of the animal pole decreases during meiotic cell division. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Meiotic maturation is essential for the reproduction procedure of many animals. During this process an oocyte produces a large egg cell and tiny polar bodies by highly asymmetric division.
