Do surface columnar defects produce bulk pinning?

Physica C: Superconductivity, 2000
Abstract In order to focus on the effectiveness of surface columnar defects (SCDs) in bulk materials we have analyzed the magnetic properties of melt-textured YBa2Cu3O7−δ samples, irradiated on opposite sides by means of 2 GeV gold ions. The irradiation affects 10% of the whole volume.

Defects in sublimation-grown SiC bulk crystals

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2002
In view of its excellent thermal, mechanical and electronic properties, silicon carbide is the reference semiconductor material for high-temperature, high-frequency and high-power devices. Ingots of monocrystalline SiC which are currently grown by the seeded sublimation growth technique have opened the path to the production of large-area SiC wafers ...

Vacancy defects in bulk ammonothermal GaN crystals

Journal of Crystal Growth, 2010
We have applied positron annihilation spectroscopy to study in-grown vacancy defects in bulk GaN crystals grown by the ammonothermal method. We observe a high concentration of Ga vacancy related defects in n-type samples in spite of the low growth temperature, suggesting that oxygen impurities promote the formation of vacancies also through other ...

Structural defects in bulk and epitaxial CdTe

Materials Science and Engineering: B, 1993
The advantages of growing bulk CdTe from the vapour are summarized and the structural defects present in material grown using three different vapour methods compared critically. Kawano's growth rate explanation of twin distribution is developed and the effect of growth conditions in anomalous cases is speculated upon.

Electronic Structure of Bulk and Defected CaCu3Ti4O12

ECS Transactions, 2006
The calcium copper titanate CaCu3Ti4O12 is a distorted perovskite exhibiting a giant dielectric constant with non-ferroelectric temperature behavior. Recent investigations tend to attribute the origin of the anomalous behavior of CaCu3Ti4O12 dielectric properties to the presence of heterogeneous microstructure and grain boundary layers, excluding that ...

Structural Techniques for Bulk Defects Characterization

1982
This lecture considers briefly the most widely applied structural techniques for the characterization of crystal defects in silicon, like X-ray topography, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Examples of defects analysis are reported concerning the characterization of the defects introduced by the phosphorous predeposition in Si and the ...

Bulk Defect Characterization Using Short Wavelength Measurements

1983
We present a summary of the work we have done at Stanford on bulk defect evaluation in structural ceramics. A short wavelength approach to defect detection and characterization was taken. Our results indicate that defect detection and material characterization are successful in the short wavelength regime.

Twice reflected ultrasonic bulk wave for surface defect monitoring

Ultrasonics
This work offers an ultrasonic structural health monitoring (SHM) approach for assessing the defects located on the same surface and at one side of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer array. It is based on the analysis of ultrasonic bulk wave travelling in the thickness direction obtained from an enhanced full-skip configuration of the time-of-flight ...
