A Compressive Flow Prediction Model of Zr56Co28Al16 Bulk Metallic Glass in Supercooled Liquid Region

open access: yesMetals
Bulk metallic glasses exhibit unique viscoplastic flow behavior within their supercooled liquid region. Their high-temperature deformation mechanisms diverge markedly from the highly localized deformation at room temperature.

New Calcium Based Bulk Metallic Glasses

open access: yes, 2003
Thermal properties of a number of new Ca-based bulk metallic glasses are reported and discussed here. The compositional range of the new metallic glasses follows the formula:CaA(Y,Ln)B(Mg,Sn)C(Ga,Zn,Al,Ag)D(Cu,Ni)E,where A ranges from 0.40 to 0.70, B = 0

Upcycling Keratin‐Based Textile Waste Into High‐Performance Hybrid Fibers Via Tuning the Interfacial Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Keratin recovered from animal‐hair textile waste is fractionated and blended with cellulose to produce continuously spun hybrid fibers. Selecting the high‐molecular‐weight keratin fraction enables 30 wt.% keratin incorporation while maintaining high strength in dry and wet states.

A Modified Free Volume Model For Characterizing Of Rate Effect In Bulk Metallic Glasses

open access: yes, 2008
We investigate the plastic deformation and constitutive behaviour of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). A dimensionless Deborah number De(ID) = t(r)/t(i) is proposed to characterize the rate effect in BMGs, where t(r) is the structural relaxing characteristic

Scratch-induced work hardening of an atomically flat bulk metallic glass by stress-driven structural ordering

open access: yesFriction
Although enhanced structural relaxation is generally believed to be an important contributor to the work hardening of metallic glasses subjected to a triaxial stress state, direct observation of the relaxation process in response to work hardening has ...

Self‐Assembled Crystalline Peptoid Nanomaterials as Metal‐Free Enzyme Mimics for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Hydration and Precipitation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by metal‐free carbonic anhydrases (CAs) that achieve efficient catalysis without metal cofactors, we herein report a sequence‐defined supramolecular peptoid platform that mimics metal‐free CAs and exhibits hydrolytic activity via a supramolecular assembly‐mediated proton‐transfer mechanism.

In-situ modeling of an FeBYNb metallic glass revealing the Invar effect

open access: yesMaterials & Design
Fe-based metallic glasses universally show an exceptionally low coefficient of thermal expansion due to their ferromagnetic interactions. This effect is called the Invar effect and is rarely seen in crystalline materials.

Deciphering the Photopolymerization‐Induced Nanostructures and Interface Formation for Submicrometer Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work reveals the UV‐curing‐induced monomer‐rich domain, oligomer‐rich domain, and entangled oligomer domain. The cured submicron films in stressed state induce interlayer nano‐wrinkle structures during the deposition of the second layer. Stress‐free cured films in relaxed state form non‐diffusive, diffusive and semi‐diffusive interlayer ...

Genetically Programmed Shape‐Morphing of Engineered Living Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, bacterial and mammalian engineered living materials (ELMs) are presented, in which living cells direct genetically programmed and enzymatically mediated shape‐morphing. The resulting deformation and shape‐recovery can be actuated in a genetically controlled manner by an ELM incorporating out‐of‐equilibrium counteracting biochemical reactions with
