Development and Evaluation of a Low‐Cost, Semi‐Automated Camera Trap for Surveying Bumble Bee Communities

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Camera traps are emerging as a useful tool for noninvasive insect monitoring; however, it remains unclear how to lure diurnal insects to traps, how to detect them upon arrival, and how camera‐based methods compare to conventional sampling. We developed a low‐cost, open‐source camera trap to monitor wild bumble bees in agricultural fields. We found that

Colonies of Bumble Bees (Bombus impatiens) Produce Fewer Workers, Less Bee Biomass, and Have Smaller Mother Queens Following Fungicide Exposure

open access: yesInsects, 2015
Bees provide vital pollination services to the majority of flowering plants in both natural and agricultural systems. Unfortunately, both native and managed bee populations are experiencing declines, threatening the persistence of these plants and crops.

What currency do bumble bees maximize? [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
In modelling bumble bee foraging, net rate of energetic intake has been suggested as the appropriate currency. The foraging behaviour of honey bees is better predicted by using efficiency, the ratio of energetic gain to expenditure, as the currency.

With a Great Story Comes Great Responsibility: Role of Narrative in Leadership Development

open access: yesNew Directions for Student Leadership, Volume 2025, Issue 185, Page 81-87, Spring 2025.
ABSTRACT Comic books reside uniquely within American culture. Historians have contended comics are more than just sequential artwork mixed with engaging stories, but rather, a framework by which the generations make sense of who they are. These stories are a reflection of cultural conscience; a lens through which we can view the world and a mirror ...

Analysis of Pollination Services Provided by Wild and Managed Bees (Apoidea) in Wild Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton) Production in Maine, USA, with a Literature Review

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
Maine is the largest producer of wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton) in the United States. Pollination comes from combinations of honey bees (Apis mellifera (L.)), commercial bumble bees (Bombus impatiens Cresson), and wild bees.

The 2024 General Election and the Rise of Reform UK

open access: yesThe Political Quarterly, Volume 96, Issue 1, Page 91-101, January/March 2025.
Abstract This article examines the social base of support for Reform UK. Did Nigel Farage's new party depend on the same types of ‘left behind’ voters who had previously backed UKIP? Do the results of the 2024 election suggest a hardening of the social divides that underpinned the rise of UKIP? Or has Britain's Eurosceptic and anti‐immigration movement

Foxglove, Digitalis purpurea: An Eco-feast Plant for Bumble Bee Conservation in the Northwestern Himalayas

open access: yesSociobiology
Bumble bees (Bombus spp.) are key pollinators in Himalayan ecosystem, but habitat degradation and floral resource scarcity threaten their population. Foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, an introduced plant with deep corolla, is an important source of pollen ...

Bumble bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus terrestris) collecting honeydew from the giant willow aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hymenoptera Research, 2019
Only rarely have bumble bees (Bombus) been observed collecting honeydew from aphids (Aphididae) feeding on phloem sap. This behavior may be rare because the percentage of sugar in honeydew egested from aphids is generally well below the sugar ...

125 years of exploration and research at Gough's Cave (Somerset, UK) 125 ans d'exploration et de recherches à Gough's Cave (Somerset, Royaume‐Uni)

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
Our understanding of the recolonization of northwest Europe in the period leading up to the Lateglacial Interstadial relies heavily on discoveries from Gough's Cave (Somerset, UK). Gough's Cave is the richest Late Upper Palaeolithic site in the British Isles, yielding an exceptional array of human remains, stone and organic artefacts, and butchered ...

The Effect of Foraging on Bumble Bees, Bombus terrestris, Reared under Laboratory Conditions

open access: yesInsects, 2020
Bumble bees are important pollinators broadly used by farmers in greenhouses and under conditions in which honeybee pollination is limited. As such, bumble bees are increasingly being reared for commercial purposes, which brings into question whether ...
