Understanding the Flight of the Bumblebee

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2012
Bumblebees are remarkable navigators. While their flight paths may look scattered to the casual eye, all that buzzing about is anything but random. Like the travelling salesman in the famous mathematical problem of how to take the shortest path along multiple stops, bumblebees quickly find efficient routes among flowers. And once they find a good route,

Complex effects of climatic variation on bumblebee queen fitness

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
A dearth of data on the health of wild‐insect populations hinders efforts to fully grasp the extent of historical population declines or unravel the mechanisms driving these effects. We help fill this data deficit by testing how climatic variation affects health, reproduction, size and survival in bumblebees—important insect pollinators.

Using citizen science to monitor pollination services [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
1. Pollination by insects is a vital ecosystem service and the need for its assessment is increasing in recognition and political pressure, but there are currently no large-scale systematic monitoring schemes in place to measure the direct provision of ...

Temperature influences pollinators' choice of floral partners independently of community composition

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This paper presents novel research that empirically demonstrates a direct link between temperature and plant–pollinator interaction patterns, independently of changes to community composition in either guild. We find that even without changes to community composition, pollinators including bumblebees exhibit different interactions across temperatures ...

From cities to refuges for pollinators: Urban practices for enhancing pollinator habitats in changing landscapes

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
A framework for the support of pollinators in urban areas is developed here, based on five pillars: nesting, flower resources, artificial support, management and society acceptance, with additional key elements from science and society. Society should incorporate strategies for pollinators as in this framework by means of co‐planning with stakeholders,

Urbanised landscape and microhabitat differences can influence flowering phenology and synchrony in an annual herb

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
In conclusion, our results indicate that in addition to landscape changes associated with urbanisation, variations in local microhabitats also influence the flowering phenology and synchrony of C. communis populations. Urbanised landscapes and differences in microhabitats could contribute to the diversification of phenological patterns between ...

The Effect of Oral Administration of dsRNA on Viral Replication and Mortality in Bombus terrestris

open access: yesViruses, 2015
Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV), a single-stranded RNA virus, has a worldwide distribution and affects honeybees as well as other important pollinators.

Gravity, Lorentz Violation, and the Standard Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The role of the gravitational sector in the Lorentz- and CPT-violating Standard-Model Extension (SME) is studied. A framework is developed for addressing this topic in the context of Riemann-Cartan spacetimes, which include as limiting cases the usual ...

Lower bumblebee colony reproductive success in agricultural compared with urban environments

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2018
Urbanization represents a rapidly growing driver of land-use change. While it is clear that urbanization impacts species abundance and diversity, direct effects of urban land use on animal reproductive success are rarely documented.

An exact Schwarzschild-like solution in a bumblebee gravity model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We have obtained an exact vacuum solution from a gravity sector contained in the minimal standard-model extension. The theoretical model assumes a Riemann spacetime coupled to the bumblebee field which is responsible for the spontaneous Lorentz symmetry ...
