Comparative Effectiveness of Fixed and Standard RUTF Dosing Protocols for Treatment of Uncomplicated Severe Acute Malnutrition in Afghanistan

open access: yesMaternal &Child Nutrition, Volume 22, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Afghanistan has experienced persistently high wasting levels. To improve treatment accessibility and reduce costs, a simplified treatment protocol (STP) with a fixed daily dose of two sachets of ready‐to‐use therapeutic food (RUTF) for severe wasting was introduced.

Exploring the Influence of Equatorial Waves on a Record‐Breaking Extreme Precipitation Event in Central Sahel: Insights From Convection Permitting Simulations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 12, 28 June 2026.
Abstract The floods of 01 September 2009 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, were among the most severe in the Central Sahel's history, highlighting the region's persistent flood risk. This extreme precipitation event (EPE) was influenced by various atmospheric drivers, including Convectively Coupled Equatorial Waves (CCEWs).

How Well Do CMIP6 Models Simulate the Influence of the West African Westerly Jet on Sahel Precipitation?

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue 7, 15 June 2026.
Climate models generally reproduce the WAWJ and August peak but simulate its onset prematurely and too strongly relative to ERA5. CMIP6 simulations struggle to reproduce the jet–precipitation relationship in the Sahel and underrepresent associated moisture transports.

Effects of natural environmental factors on growth and tuber production of Tacca leontopetaloides (Polynesian arrowroot), an underutilized food crop

open access: yesAgricultural &Environmental Letters, Volume 11, Issue 1, June 2026.
Tacca's productivity in dry tropical zones increases with rainfall and land cover gradients. Phosphorus (P) content in soil is positively correlated with plant aboveground growth traits (total height, leaf area) and tuber weight of the species, whereas potassium (K) is correlated only with tuber weight.

Opportunities and Challenges for Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies in Sub‐Saharan Africa

open access: yesBirth Defects Research, Volume 118, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Congenital anomalies (CA) are ranked as the 3rd and 4th leading cause of neonatal and under‐5 mortality, respectively. Over 30% of infants born with a serious CA are found in sub‐Saharan Africa. Yet there are few robust epidemiological data on the burden and distribution of CA and associated mortality, disability, and morbidity ...
