Burning bright or burning out?

open access: yesIndian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2015
Ophthalmology is a rapidly evolving field: Therapeutic models are constantly evolving and so are the drugs used. Striking examples of this would be the treatment of choice for age-related macular degeneration. A decade or so ago the treatment would have been different from what is advised today; refractive surgery too is another subspecialty where one ...

Dressings for superficial and partial thickness burns.

open access: yesCochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2013
BACKGROUND An acute burn wound is a complex and evolving injury. Extensive burns produce systemic consequences, in addition to local tissue damage. Treatment of partial thickness burn wounds is directed towards promoting healing and a wide variety of ...

Resource Burning for Permissionless Systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Proof-of-work puzzles and CAPTCHAS consume enormous amounts of energy and time. These techniques are examples of resource burning: verifiable consumption of resources solely to convey information. Can these costs be eliminated? It seems unlikely since resource burning shares similarities with "money burning" and "costly signaling", which are ...

Acetic acid dressings converted skin graft donor sites into full thickness wounds in a burned infant, a case report

open access: yesBurns Open, 2023
Colonisation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa considerably increases the mortality rate in burns, due to its common resistance to antibiotic treatment. Simple dressings consisting of gauze soaked in acetic acid have been proven as effective in eradicating ...

Hypergraph burning, matchings, and zero forcing [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Lazy burning is a recently introduced variation of burning where only one set of vertices is chosen to burn in the first round. In hypergraphs, lazy burning spreads when all but one vertex in a hyperedge is burned. The lazy burning number is the minimum number of initially burned vertices that eventually burns all vertices.

Delineating wildfire burns and regrowth using satellite imagery to assess moose (Alces alces) spatial responses to burns

open access: yesEcosphere
Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and size of wildfires. Wildfire burns can influence wildlife space use, but prior to understanding the relationship between wildlife and burns, the extent of wildfires and the regrowth of burned areas

Use of an Esophageal Heat Exchanger to Maintain Core Temperature during Burn Excisions and to Attenuate Pyrexia on the Burns Intensive Care Unit

open access: yesCase Reports in Anesthesiology, 2016
Introduction. Burns patients are vulnerable to hyperthermia due to sepsis and SIRS and to hypothermia due to heat loss during excision surgery. Both states are associated with increased morbidity and mortality.
