Moving into the information age : from records to Google Earth [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Many of us are avid recorders of Yorkshire’ varied flora and fauna. Over a recording career of many years a single recorder can personally amass large data sets or, if involved with networks of similarly-minded people, groups of recorders can rapidly ...

Metachromatic Butterfly Bile Pigments for Multi‐Level Optical Security Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐derived optical security materials are manufactured by embedding butterfly‐based pigments in polymer films. Tunable color and fluorescence responses arise from concentration‐controlled metachromasy, enabling spatially encoded patterns with distinct visible, UV‐active, and spectral signatures.

A Multiscale Butterfly Algorithm for Multidimensional Fourier Integral Operators

open access: yes, 2015
This paper presents an efficient multiscale butterfly algorithm for computing Fourier integral operators (FIOs) of the form $(\mathcal{L} f)(x) = \int_{R^d}a(x,\xi) e^{2\pi \i \Phi(x,\xi)}\hat{f}(\xi) d\xi$, where $\Phi(x,\xi)$ is a phase function, $a(x,\

Two Material Properties from One Wavelength‐Orthogonal Photoresin Enabled by a Monochromatic Laser Integrated Stereolithographic Apparatus (Mono LISA)

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 37, Issue 13, April 2, 2025.
A single object with dual properties – degradable and non‐degradable – is fabricated in a single print simply by switching the printing colors. The advanced multi‐material printing is enabled by the combination of a fully wavelength‐orthogonal photoresin and a monochromatic tunable laser printer, paving the way for precise multi‐material ...

The genome sequence of the Scalloped Hook-tip moth, Falcaria lacertinaria (Linnaeus, 1758) [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
We present a genome assembly from an individual female Falcaria lacertinaria (the Scalloped Hook-tip; Arthropoda; Insecta; Lepidoptera; Drepanidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 300.20 megabases.

Hall plateau diagram for the Hofstadter butterfly energy spectrum

open access: yes, 2006
We extensively study the localization and the quantum Hall effect in the Hofstadter butterfly, which emerges in a two-dimensional electron system with a weak two-dimensional periodic potential.

Ferroelectric Quantum Dots for Retinomorphic In‐Sensor Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work has provided a protocol for fabricating retinomorphic phototransistors by integrating ferroelectric ligands with quantum dots. The resulting device combines ferroelectricity, optical responsiveness, and low‐power operation to enable adaptive signal amplification and high recognition accuracy under low‐light conditions, while supporting ...

Conservation planning for pollinators in the U.S. Great Plains: considerations of context, treatments, and scale

open access: yesEcosphere, 2021
Populations of many species of grassland‐associated butterflies, moths, and bumblebees in the Great Plains of North America are experiencing steep declines due to habitat loss and degradation—primarily conversion of grasslands to row‐crop agriculture and

Rainbow Photonic Crystals: Self‐Assembly of Carbohydrate Bottlebrushes Block Copolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Full‐color reflective 1D photonic crystals, capable of a tunable, responsive, and reversible color with high repeatability, are created from the self‐assembly of carbohydrate‐based brush block copolymers (BR01‐04). Abstract Tunable and responsive photonic crystal systems are the subject of great research interest owing to their ability to actively ...
