Seabird bycatch in a Baltic coastal gillnet fishery is orders of magnitude larger than official reports

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2022
Bycatch, or the incidental capture of non-target species in fisheries, has been identified as one of the major threats affecting seabird populations worldwide.

Bycatch Quotas, Risk Pools, and Cooperation in the Pacific Whiting Fishery

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
The United States Pacific whiting fishery uses mid-water trawl gear to target Pacific whiting off the United States West Coast. The fishery is subject to sector-specific bycatch caps for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and several rockfish ...

Bycatch and discards in the artisanal shrimp trawl fishery in Northern Peru.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
This study analyses the bycatch composition of an artisanal shrimp trawl fleet operating between Cabo Blanco and Máncora in Northern Peru between April 2019 and March 2020.

Participatory Risk Assessment of Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) and Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) Bycatch in Northern Peru

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
Uncertainties about the magnitude of bycatch in poorly assessed fisheries impede effective conservation management. In northern Peru, small-scale fisheries (SSF) bycatch negatively impacts marine megafauna populations and the livelihoods of fishers which

Illuminating gillnets to save seabirds and the potential for multi-taxa bycatch mitigation [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2018
Bycatch in net fisheries is recognized as a major source of mortality for many marine species, including seabirds. Few mitigation solutions, however, have been identified.

Estimating Bycatch Mortality for Marine Mammals: Concepts and Best Practices

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
Fisheries bycatch is the greatest current source of human-caused deaths of marine mammals worldwide, with severe impacts on the health and viability of many populations.

Bycatch species distribution from mid-water trawlers in the north-eastern Arabian sea: a step towards the implementation of marine spatial planning

open access: yesJournal of Maps, 2023
Spatial conservation planning to reduce the impact of fishing on ecosystems necessitates understanding of the spatial distribution of bycatch in fishing grounds.

Scalable low‐cost seabed landers: the missing link for sustained, integrated, long‐term observations in dynamic shallow seas

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Seabed landers, when equipped with a range of biotic and abiotic sensors, offer a non‐invasive and cost‐effective solution for ecosystem‐scale monitoring of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) in dynamic shallow seas.

Modifications to PUCL3 rule for bycatch.

open access: yes, 2023
The PUCL3 rule is used to set horse-mackerel bycatch limits for the pelagic fishery. Here a modification is put forward based on two reasons: an updated horse-mackerel assessment, and an alternative resampling method used in the computations.

Multi‐Platform Deployments of Low‐Cost Devices for Cetacean Passive Acoustic Monitoring

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Recent advances in affordable, user‐friendly devices offer new opportunities to overcome cost constraints of underwater passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) and expand acoustic data collection. In this study, we deployed low‐cost acoustic recorders and underwater cameras across a range of platforms in the Western Mediterranean, including fishing gear ...
