Complex interactions in ant–plant mutualisms: The role of multiple ant food resources in mediating plant defence, pollination and fitness in a tropical shrub

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 6, Page 1137-1147, December 2025.
Our results show that ants reduced leaf herbivory on plants offering both EFN and trophobiotic insects. Although ants did not directly affect pollinator behaviour, leaf herbivory in plants hosting treehoppers indirectly influenced pollination by reducing both visit duration and frequency.

Anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of the stem bark of Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss.

open access: yesJournal of Ethnopharmacology, 2011
Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. is popularly known as "murici pequeno" and is native to the Brazilian Cerrado. This species has been used as an antimicrobial, anti-hemorrhagic, anti-diarrheal and anti-inflammatory. Nevertheless, scientific information regarding Byrsonima intermedia is limited; there are no reports related to its possible anti ...

Effects of Environmental Changes in Degraded Areas on the Establishment of Plant Communities in the Brazilian Cerrado

open access: yesInternational Journal of Forestry Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Understanding the interrelationships between plant communities and soil attributes in gully erosion can make valuable contributions to strategies focused on the conservation and recovery of degraded areas. Thus, we aimed to evaluate how the composition and structure of different plant communities are affected by soil attributes in a degraded area by ...

Anti-inflammatory effect of extract and fractions from the leaves of Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. in rats

open access: yesJournal of Ethnopharmacology, 2011
Byrsonima intermedia is commonly used for its antiseptic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties in the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery in Brazilian folk medicine. The purpose of this study was to examine the anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous extract and fractions of Byrsonima intermedia leaves.Rats with carrageenan-induced paw ...

Facilitative Interactions among Extrafloral Nectary-bearing Plants, Ants, and Neighboring Vegetation in the Brazilian Cerrado

open access: yesSociobiology
Herbivory is a key plant–insect interaction that can have a negative impact on plant development. Some plants have evolved indirect defenses by attracting protective ants through extrafloral nectaries (EFNs).

Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss.: Gastric and duodenal anti-ulcer, antimicrobial and antidiarrheal effects in experimental rodent models

open access: yesJournal of Ethnopharmacology, 2012
An ethnopharmacological survey indicated that the leaves of Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. (Malpighiaceae), a medicinal species commonly found in the Brazilian Cerrado, can be used against gastroduodenal disorders, such as gastric ulcers and diarrhea. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a methanolic extract of Byrsonima intermedia (

Variações morfológicas nas flores de Byrsonima intermedia (MALPIGHIACEAE) e seu impacto no valor adaptativo da espécie: polinização e produção de frutos [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
For plants which rely on biological pollination, floral traits related to pollination can include tactile, olfactory and visual cues and color, shape and odor or combinations of these cues can be used to identify flowers as source of rewards. One of the components that attract pollinators is symmetry, used to discriminate flowers with different levels ...
