Study of green‐coloured gems of the Roman period from the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (Greece) and their possible geographic origin

Nineteen green‐coloured gems in jewellery of the Roman period from the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki were studied with optical microscope, mobile Raman and Vis‐NIR spectroscopy as well as EDXRF. Seventeen out of nineteen gems were identified as natural emeralds with characteristics similar to Egyptian emeralds.

Character recognition in Byzantine seals with deep neural networks

Seals are small coin-shaped artifacts, mostly made of lead, held with strings to seal letters. This work presents the first attempt towards automatic reading of text on Byzantine seal images.Byzantine seals are generally decorated with iconography on the obverse side and Greek text on the reverse side.
