Systematic review of shared decision‐making in guidelines about colorectal cancer screening

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Cancer Care, Volume 31, Issue 6, November 2022., 2022
Abstract Introduction We aimed to systematically evaluate quality of shared decision‐making (SDM) in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and consensus statements (CSs). Methods Search for CRC screening guidances was from 2010 to November 2021 in EMBASE, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus and CDSR, and the World Wide Web ...

Prevención transfronteriza de la obesidad infantil: comentario de los National Institutes of Health

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 22, Issue S5, Octubre 2021., 2021

Comparison of the Peritoneal Cancer Index and Dutch region count as tools to stage patients with peritoneal metastases of colorectal cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1153-1161, December 2020., 2020
This retrospective study compared two classification tools, the Dutch region count and the Peritoneal Cancer Index, for colorectal peritoneal metastases, and validated the results in a separate cohort. The region count was easier to apply, and may benefit doctors who refer patients to expert centres.

Selective decontamination of the digestive tract in upper gastrointestinal surgery: systematic review with meta‐analysis of randomized clinical trials

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1015-1021, December 2020., 2020
This meta‐analysis investigated the influence of selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) on outcomes after upper gastrointestinal surgery. SDD led to a reduction in anastomotic leakage (odds ratio (OR) 0·39, 95 per cent c.i. 0·19 to 0·80; P = 0·010) and pneumonia (OR 0·42, 0·23 to 0·78; P = 0·006).

Obese patients and robotic colorectal surgery: systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1042-1053, December 2020., 2020
Obesity is a major health problem that doubles the chance of colorectal cancer. The benefits of robotic surgery for colorectal operations in obese patients versus non‐obese patients are unknown. This meta‐analysis and systematic review highlights that robotic surgery in obese patients is similar and feasible compared with that in non‐obese patients ...

Accuracy of faecal immunochemical testing in patients with symptomatic colorectal cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1180-1188, December 2020., 2020
This study confirmed that the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) has a high diagnostic accuracy for detecting colorectal cancer in symptomatic patients. FIT can be used to triage 2‐week‐wait colorectal referrals. FIT tests to streamline pathways Background The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the faecal immunochemical test ...

Chemical signature of colorectal cancer: case–control study for profiling the breath print

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1189-1199, December 2020., 2020
Available screening methods for colorectal cancer have poor reliability and low patient compliance. Cancer cells produce altered metabolites, which are transported in the bloodstream and released in the alveoli; these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be detected in exhaled breath.

Tumour growth rate of carcinoma of the colon and rectum: retrospective cohort study

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1200-1207, December 2020., 2020
Few studies have evaluated the growth pattern of colorectal cancer. Forty‐three patients who underwent CT twice more than 5 weeks apart were included over a 2‐year interval. The median doubling time was 211 days, with a concerning suggestion of tumour progression.

Australasian ACPGBI risk prediction model for 30‐day mortality after colorectal cancer surgery

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1208-1216, December 2020., 2020
The aim was to test the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) original (2003) and revised (2010) models as predictors of 30‐day mortality in an Australian patient cohort, and then recalibrate these models using data from Australian patients.
