In-hospital mortality of HIV-infected cryptococcal meningitis patients withC. gattiiandC. neoformansinfection in Gaborone, Botswana [PDF]
The clinical presentations and outcomes of cryptococcal meningitis (CM) may be associated with the cryptococcal species causing the infections. To evaluate clinical differences between CM caused by C. neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, we examined outcomes in HIV-infected adults with CM admitted to Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana. Among

Ethanolic extracts from leaves, stems, and roots of Schinus weinmanniifolia Mart. ex Engl. were evaluated for phytochemical composition and biological activities. The extracts exhibited antioxidant, photoprotective, and antimicrobial activity, without hemolytic effects or cytotoxicity at active concentrations. Syringic acid, epicatechin, and rutin were

Objective: It has been known that VNI molecular type of Cryptococcus neoformans/C. gattii is strongly associated with HIV patients. However, this paradigm has recently been challenged because of the high prevalence of VNI molecular type among non-HIV patients with cryptococcosis in East Asia. The purpose of this study was to answer the question: “Among

Correlation of antifungal susceptibility and molecular type within theCryptococcus neoformans/C. gattiispecies complex [PDF]
Members of the Cryptococcus neoformans/C. gattii species complex are grouped into eight molecular types, differing in their epidemiology, disease severity and geographic range. Recent in vitro antifungal susceptibility studies of isolates of the complex revealed contradictory results.

Untargeted metabolomic analysis of the essential oil of D. lanceolata leaves collected in winter revealed that they are mostly composed of sesquiterpenes, while those collected in autumn showed a predominance of monoterpenes. Both essential oils displayed antimicrobial activity against bacterial and fungal species.

Capsule independent uptake of the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans into brain microvascular endothelial cells. [PDF]
Cryptococcosis is a life-threatening fungal disease with a high rate of mortality among HIV/AIDS patients across the world. The ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is central to the pathogenesis of cryptococcosis, but the way in which this

First isolation ofCryptococcus neoformansvar.gattii, serotype C, from the environment in Colombia [PDF]
The natural habitat of Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii, serotype B in the environment was established by Australian investigators who demonstrated its association with species of Eucalyptus. The aim of the present study was to search for the habitat of this variety in a city of Colombia, where clinical cases due to this variety occur with great ...

ABSTRACT Coagulant Moringa oleifera lectin (cMoL) is one of the compounds involved in the application of M. oleifera seeds for traditional water treatment methods. The present study highlights the new biotechnological potential of cMoL lectin as an antifungal agent against Cryptococcus neoformans B3501 and H99 and Cryptococcus gattii R265 strains ...
