Local canopy cover, shade tree identity and landscape tree cover shape leaf‐cutter ant nest density and herbivory in cacao agroforestry systems

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 4, April 2026.
Our findings provide practical guidance for agroforestry management by demonstrating that intercropping with selected species can mitigate damage from leaf‐cutter ants in cacao agroforests. At the landscape scale, high tree cover was associated with low herbivory rates, emphasising the need to maintain or restore forested habitats.

Cooperative human signals to honeyguides form local dialects

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 3, Page 682-694, March 2026.
Abstract Human language enables the exchange of complex information and precise instructions for collaborative planning and action. It rapidly evolves through social learning, generating diverse cultural communication signals used not only with other humans, but also with domesticated animals bred or trained to respond.

Primary Liver Cancer Trends Worldwide and in China: Analysis of GLOBOCAN 2022 Data and Disease Management Implications

open access: yesPortal Hypertension &Cirrhosis, Volume 5, Issue 1, Page 65-95, March 2026.
Primary liver cancer remains a major global health burden, with China accounting for over 40% of cases. The predominant etiology is shifting from viral hepatitis to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), while aflatoxin exposure and unhealthy lifestyles remain important contributors. Comprehensive control strategies—including

Effects of Dissolution Regimes on Flow Channelization and Solute Transport in 3D Fracture Networks: Insights From Graph‐Based Reactive Transport Modeling

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract We investigate how mineral dissolution reshapes flow pathways and solute transport in three‐dimensional discrete fracture networks using a computationally efficient graph‐based reactive transport model. The DFNs are inspired by field‐site observations of fractured carbonate and represent realistic connectivity and structural heterogeneity ...

A Growth‐Coupled Evolutionary Strategy Enhances Heme Biosynthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

open access: yesBiotechnology Journal, Volume 21, Issue 1, January 2026.
Graphical Abstract and Lay Summary Introducing a plasmid with a heme‐responsive promoter connected to a growth‐promoting gene into Saccharomyces cerevisiae created a positive feedback loop between intracellular heme levels and cell growth. After 100 h of adaptive evolution, the plasmid was removed, resulting in a mutant strain that exhibited an ...
