Cable Ampacity Calculations: A Comparison of Methods

2015 IEEE Rural Electric Power Conference, 2015
When designing electrical power systems, it is often necessary to determine underground cable ampacity. Various methods are in use today, including computer simulation, ampacity tables, and a method that has recently been suggested that includes the effects of moisture migration through soil.

Ampacities for Cables in Trays with Firestops

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1981
This paper describes how cable ampacity is influenced by firestop materials for various cable and firestop configurations. Both solid silicone elastomer and silicone RTV foam elastomer firestops were evaluated. To determine cable derating factors, laboratory tests were performed with the cable tray fully loaded to obtain the maximum operating ...

Ampacity of Cable in Covered Tray

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1984
Solid tray covers are used in power generating station cable tray systems. The published literature contains little data about the effects of tray covers on cable operating temperatures, and the National Electrical Code provides limited guidance.

Point-and-click cable ampacity studies

IEEE Computer Applications in Power, 1998
For determining the maximum current power cables can sustain from a thermal point of view without deterioration of any of their electrical and/or mechanical properties is an important design aspect of electrical installations. The accuracy of these ampacity studies provides significant insight towards intelligently upgrading existing power cable ...

Ampacities of Multicondutor Cables in Trays

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1972
The presently available rules for prescribing ampacities of cables in trays have been found unduly restrictive for light to medium tray loading, leading to wide disregard of such derating for all loadings. Here is presented a method, founded on sound heat-transfer technology, and experimentally verified, for such ampacity determination.

Advanced computer programs for power cable ampacity calculations

IEEE Computer Applications in Power, 1990
The Cable Ampacity Program (CAP), a set of user-friendly routines for IBM or compatible desktop computers is discussed. CAP includes a user-friendly front-end program, INPUT; a steady-state analysis program, SAMP; a transient analysis program, TAMP; support files for all programs; and graph programs for display of the steady-state and transient results.

Cable Ampacities: Computer Applications for Electric Generating Stations

IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, 1986
The cable ampacities in ICEA P-46-426 for underground cables are based upon a paper written by J. H. Neher and M. H. McGrath, in 1957. The Neher/McGrath calculations are complex, requiring a large amount of data and the solution of numerous equations. This paper will discuss the Neher/McGrath theory as applied in ICEA P-46-426.

The effect on ampacity for multiple cable crossing and mitigation to improve its ampacity

2016 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon), 2016
At some point underground, there are high voltage cables and medium voltage cables that will be crossing each other. Many utilities do not consider or ignore the derating of ampacity caused by multiple cables crossing. In IEC 60287-3-3: Calculation of Power Ratings — Cables Crossing External Heat Sources, the ampacity rating for only two crossing ...

Circuits operation control and overloads protection: power cables equivalent ampacities

1999 IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (Cat. No.99CH36371), 2000
The evaluation of the ampacity of electric power cables and the overload protection are currently based on criteria, to which the operation of the circuits will have to satisfy each time like the first time, without self-memory of the way of life, without discounts or debts correspondent to the actual profile load, certainly different from a steady ...

Ampacities for Cables in Randomly Filled Trays

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1971
The allowable current which may be carried by a given conductor size cable has been thoroughly investigated in almost every conceivable type of cable installation. One area which has not had much attention up to now is the allowable current which can be carried by cables in cable trays, or troughs.
