Facet-sparing lumbar decompression with a minimally invasive flexible MicroBlade Shaver® versus traditional decompression: quantitative radiographic assessment. [PDF]
BackgroundLaminectomy/laminotomy and foraminotomy are well established surgical techniques for treatment of symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis. However, these procedures have significant limitations, including limited access to lateral and foraminal ...

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

LC-GAN: Image-to-image Translation Based on Generative Adversarial Network for Endoscopic Images [PDF]
Intelligent vision is appealing in computer-assisted and robotic surgeries. Vision-based analysis with deep learning usually requires large labeled datasets, but manual data labeling is expensive and time-consuming in medical problems. We investigate a novel cross-domain strategy to reduce the need for manual data labeling by proposing an image-to ...

A VARIATION IN THE COURSE OF THE HUMAN VERTEBRAL ARTERY: ANATOMICAL AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The macroscopic study of 31 adult cadavers proved a variation to Matula and Lang's study. In 2 cases (6.4%) a prevertebral segment ran up to Cy in one of which (3.2%) the middle cervical ganglion was pierced.

Ion channel function of polycystin‐2/polycystin‐1 heteromer revealed by structure‐guided mutagenesis
Mutations in polycystin‐1 (PC1) or polycystin‐2 (PC2) cause autosomal‐dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). We generated a novel gain‐of‐function PC2/PC1 heteromeric ion channel by mutating pore‐blocking residues. Moreover, we demonstrated that PC2 will preferentially assemble with PC1 to form heteromeric complexes when PC1 is co‐expressed ...

Autonomous Driving in the Lung using Deep Learning for Localization [PDF]
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, and early diagnosis is critical to improving patient outcomes. To diagnose cancer, a highly trained pulmonologist must navigate a flexible bronchoscope deep into the branched structure of the lung for biopsy.

Decoding the dual role of autophagy in cancer through transcriptional and epigenetic regulation
Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation controls autophagy, which exerts context‐dependent effects on cancer: Autophagy suppresses tumorigenesis by maintaining cellular homeostasis or promotes tumor progression by supporting survival under stress. In this “In a Nutshell” article, we explore the intricate mechanisms of the dual function of autophagy ...

Quantifying Cross-scatter Contamination in Biplane Fluoroscopy Motion Analysis Systems [PDF]
Biplane fluoroscopy is used for dynamic in vivo three-dimensional motion analysis of various joints of the body. Cross-scatter between the two fluoroscopy systems may limit tracking accuracy. This study measured the magnitude and effects of cross-scatter

The use of cadaver tissues in transplantation
IN the short span of thirteen years human-kidney homotransplantation has progressed from developmental uncertainty to a therapeutic endeavor that has rehabilitated many patients in terminal renal failure, both in this country and abroad. Contrary to many apprehensions, the use of drugs to suppress the immune response to homografts has not been ...
