Introduction Amid the gaudily-coloured parade of tropical crabs few are more splendidly patterned than the matutine genera. But the patterns decorating these species brought about taxonomic disarray and from the very beginning they baffled their researchers. Already in 1817 Leach remarked: "the characters which distinguish the species are very obscure".
