Treatment of Chronic Osteomyelitis of the Calcaneus by Resection of the Calcaneus
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1974For chronic osteomyelitis of the calcaneus, total or partial resection was done in twenty patients. There was one post-anesthetic death. The results in eighteen patients were satisfactory in that the infection was eradicated and the patients were able to walk again, with or without orthopaedic shoes.

Chondromyxoid Fibroma of the Calcaneus
Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 2007Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare, benign, aggressive bone tumor whose localization in the calcaneus is even rarer. We report a case of chondromyxoid fibroma in the calcaneus of a 10-year-old Iranian boy who was treated with extended curettage. After 3 years of follow-up, the patient had experienced no recurrence.

Primary xanthoma in foot bones is an extremely rare event. In an individual without a family history of hyperlipemia, it is even a rarer finding. One case of a xanthoma of a calcaneus is presented in an otherwise asymptomatic 19-year-old normal lipidemic female. The previous literature is reviewed.

Osteomyelitis of the Calcaneus in Children
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1996Eleven cases of calcaneal osteomyelitis in children are reported. Seven were hematogenous cases, and the remaining four were related to puncture wounds. The clinical presentation was less dramatic than that seen in typical long bone osteomyelitis. Laboratory findings were also less striking.

Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 1993A case report of hematogenous calcaneal osteomyelitis has been presented along with a brief review. Hematogenous osteomyelitis of the foot is an uncommon but potentially devastating disease that can result in severe long-term sequelae. An index of suspicion in cases such as these can help the physician prevent unnecessary delay in treatment.
