Extraction Techniques for Calcareous Nannofossils

2001
This group comprises a heterogeneous collection of organisms, or their disaggregated parts ranging up to 201.tm in size. The most common examples encountered in residues are coccoliths; the basic elements of chrysomonad flagellates. Coccoliths are button shaped rings arranged in a complex manner forming hollow spheres (coccolithospheres).

Revised taxonomy and stratigraphy of Middle Miocene calcareous nannofossils of the Paratethys

Micropaleontology, 2012
The taxonomy of Paratethyan Middle Miocene calcareous nannofossils is reviewed and revised. Two new species, Syracosphaera croatica and Syracosphaera horvati, are proposed. Comparative study of coeval Neogene nannofossils from NHM and ODP (Ocean Drilling Project) reference collections give differences and similarities between the investigated areas ...

Evolutionary trends of tropical calcareous nannofossils in the late Neogene

Marine Micropaleontology, 1998
Abstract Examination of Middle–Late Miocene sediments recovered during ODP Leg 154 in western equatorial Atlantic has led to identification of evolutionary transitions in some groups of late Neogene calcareous nannofossils. Through analyses of high resolution samples (10-cm sample interval equivalent to average interval of 6 kyr) we were able to ...

Volume calculation of Paleocene calcareous nannofossils

2008
During the past decades, volume calculation of extant calcareous nannoplankton has been performed in order to convert coccolith fluxes data into carbonate export productivity. The most useful and relative recent method to estimate the volume of coccoliths is described by Young & Ziveri (2000).

Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy of the California margin

2000
Selected calcareous nannofossils were investigated by means of quantitative and semiquantitative methods in middle Miocene to Pleistocene sediments from the California margin (Pacific Ocean) recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 167. The goal of the work was to provide detailed dating and correlations of the successions recovered that span a wide

Effects of Ultrasonic Pressure on Calcareous Nannofossils

Geology, 1973
Ultrasonic cleaning is a valuable method of extracting delicate calcareous nannofossils from their matrices, but too much sonic energy can damage or even destroy the specimen. A quantitative assessment is made of the most appropriate amounts of ultrasonic pressure necessary to disaggregate the microfossil from the remaining sample and free it of ...
