The crystallization of calcium aluminate glasses

The crystallization characteristics of two commercial calcium aluminate glasses have been studied using scanning electron microscopy. In particular it is demonstrated how atomic number contrast can be used to identify rapidly crystalline phases without the need for etching and the related loss of compositional and morphological information.

Sintering of calcium aluminate mixes

Abstract Measurements of initial sintering shrinkage of mixes of CaAl4O7 and CaAl2O4 are reported in the temperature range 1360–1420°C. The particle size chosen was -45 μm and the mix proportions were 5 : 8, 4 : 10, and 3 : 11 by weight of CaAl4O7 and CaAl2O4 . The soaking periods were from 10 to 180 min.

Sintering study of calcium aluminate

Measurement of the initial sintering shrinkage of CaAl2O4 at temperatures of 1300, 1325 and 1350 °C are reported. The particle sizes chosen were −53 + 45, −63 + 53 and −75 + 63 microns and the soaking periods were from 15 to 360 min. A time dependence of the shrinkage has shown that volume diffusion is the dominant mechanism of sintering.

Stress Induced Defects in Vitreous Calcium Aluminates

Induced flaws on vitreous calcium aluminates were investigated quantitatively by applying controlled loading forces to fresh breakage surfaces. Test surfaces were chemically treated to display surface flaws, dynamically created by an indenter. The mean value of flaw length was linearly related to the square root of the applied load on the indenter.
