Phase Relationships in the Calcium Chloride – Calcium Carbide System

Canadian Journal of Chemistry, 1972
The system calcium chloride – calcium carbide has been examined by thermal analysis. The depression of the freezing point of CaCl2 by CaC2 is ideal. The system is a eutectic one, with a eutectic point at 90 mol% CaCl2 at 740 °C. Carbon is believed to be present in the electrolyte as the so called acetylide ion [Formula: see text] The melting point of ...

Calcium carbide poisoning via food in childhood

The Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2007
The fast ripening of fruits means they may contain various harmful properties. A commonly used agent in the ripening process is calcium carbide, a material most commonly used for welding purposes. Calcium carbide treatment of food is extremely hazardous because it contains traces of arsenic and phosphorous. Once dissolved in water, the carbide produces

Highly Stereoselective Synthesis of 2-Acyl-3-sulfonamidobut-2-enoates Using Solid Calcium Carbide as a Substitute for Gaseous Acetylene.

Organic Letters
Multifunctional group compounds, 2-acyl-3-sulfonamidobut-2-enoates, are efficiently constructed using solid calcium carbide as an alkyne source through the simultaneous formation of two bonds in one step. The salient features of this protocol are the use

Thermodynamic Analysis of Calcium Carbide Production

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2014
CaC2 production is studied from the viewpoint of thermodynamics using an equilibrium composition model with total Gibbs free energy minimization. It is found that CaC2 is formed directly from the reaction of C and CaO without an intermediate step under the conditions of industrial practice.

Global Exploration of the Enthalpy Landscape of Calcium Carbide

The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2010
The enthalpy landscape of CaC(2) was investigated on the ab initio level, and possible (meta)stable structures are predicted. Simulated annealing was used as a global exploration method for the determination of the local minima on the enthalpy landscapes, where the only information supplied was the number of atoms per unit cell.

Vinylation of Selected Terpenols with Calcium Carbide

Russian Journal of General Chemistry, 2017
A method for the synthesis of vinyl derivatives of the terpenols verbenol and fenchol by their reaction with calcium carbide was developed. It was found that addition of potassium fluoride affects the yield of nucleophilic addition of the corresponding alcoholate ions to acetylene.

The use of electricity in the production of calcium carbide

Proceedings of the IEE Part A: Power Engineering, 1955
The establishment of a carbide manufacturing industry in the United Kingdom has brought its own special problems for engineers and chemists to solve, and the object of the paper is to describe a typical factory deriving its electrical energy, which may be regarded as its principal raw material, from a thermal power station. The paper outlines the ...
