Fish Scales: A Multifunctional Biomaterial from Nature

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Fish scales demonstrate nature's solution to impact protection through overlapping multilayered architecture. This biological design combines mineralized surfaces with collagen networks to achieve both flexibility and fracture resistance. The structural principles inspire advanced protective materials and biomedical implants, where damage tolerance ...

1.4 Nm Tobermorite-like Calcium Silicate Hydrate Prepared at Room Temperature from Si(OH)₄ and CaCl₂ Solutions

open access: yes, 1993
Calcium silicate hydrate prepared at room temperature is known to be an amorphous or a very poorly crystalline material. It has a high surface area and may be a promising new microporous material similar to gyrolites.

Analytical tests to evaluate pozzolanic reaction in lime stabilized soils

open access: yesMethodsX, 2020
Shrink-swell soils are predominant in various parts of the parts of the world. Lime has been extensively used to reduce the shrink-swell mechanism as it chemically reacts with soil minerals forming pozzolanic products such as calcite and calcium-silicate-

Quantitative Insights into Atomic Scale Oil–Clay Adhesion Governing Shale Oil Retention and Mobility

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Atomic force microscopy reveals a clear adhesion hierarchy between shale oil and clay minerals, governed by nanoscale surface chemistry. Strong interactions on chlorite and illite arise from abundant polar sites and cation bridging, whereas weaker coupling on montmorillonite limits interfacial binding.

Drought Risk in Mango and Avocado Orchards: Insights Into Plant Water Relations and Irrigation‐Related Agronomic Solutions

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Climate change is making water availability more uncertain, with growing consequences for the productivity and long‐term sustainability of tropical and subtropical fruit orchards. Mangifera indica L. and Persea americana Mill. both require large amounts of water to sustain growth and productivity.

Reactivity of Oxidized Porous Silicon with Calcium Ion in Aqueous Media: Stability, pH Behavior, and Host‐Guest Strategies

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Oxidized porous silicon, composed of an elemental silicon porous skeleton coated with a silica shell, reacts with aqueous Ca2+ to generate a mixed silica–calcium silicate matrix that is remarkably efficient at trapping small molecules. With an emphasis on the engineering of controlled‐release drug delivery systems, this study identifies the factors ...

Strength reduction mechanism of cement-treated soil under seawater environment

open access: yesSoils and Foundations
Improving soft grounds with cement or lime is commonly used to increase their strength and deformation characteristics. However, the properties of cement/lime-treated soil deteriorate in seawater because magnesium salts accelerate calcium leaching.
