A statistical experimental design to remove sulfate by crystallization in a fluidized-bed reactor

open access: yesSustainable Environment Research, 2017
This study used crystallization in a fluidized-bed reactor as an alternative technology to the conventional chemical precipitation to remove sulfate. The Box-Behnken Design was used to study the effects and interactions of seed dosage of synthetic gypsum,

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

The kinetics of remodeling of a calcium sulfate/calcium phosphate bioceramic

open access: yesJournal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, 2017
In the last years considerable research and development activity have been expended to find new ceramic bone substitutes for the treatment of bone defects. However in many cases the drawback of synthethic bone substitutes are the slow graft incorporation and remodelling into the host bone.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Periodontal Repair in Intrabony Defects Treated With a Calcium Sulfate Implant and Calcium Sulfate Barrier

open access: yesJournal of Periodontology, 1998
This randomized, controlled, clinical study was designed to evaluate outcome following surgical implantation of an allogeneic, freeze‐dried, demineralized bone matrix‐calcium sulfate (DBM+CS) composite with a CS barrier in intrabony periodontal defects. Twenty‐six patients contributing 26 deep intrabony defects completed the study.

Lipopolysaccharide uptake is augmented in lipopolysaccharide‐tolerant mouse macrophage‐like cells via increased CD14 expression

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In normal (nontolerant) cells, CD14 is crucial for both LPS uptake and LPS signaling. In LPS‐tolerant cells, in which LPS‐induced TNF‐α and IFN‐β production is suppressed, there is a dramatic increase in surface CD14 expression. The overexpressed CD14 in LPS‐tolerant cells is responsible for the enhanced LPS uptake without inducing pro‐inflammatory ...

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Novel Non-Phosphorous Antiscalants for Inhibition of Calcium Phosphate and Calcium Sulfate Precipitation

open access: yes, 2011
A copolymer of acrylic acid (AA)/allylpolyethoxy carboxylate (APEC) was synthesized, characterized and examined as a non-phosphorous antiscalant for industrial cooling-water. Its ability to prevent calcium phosphate and sulfate precipitation was compared
