Nesidioblastosis in a Simmental Calf

A 2-day-old Simmental calf with arthrogryposis and astasia was subjected to necropsy examination. The calf was normoglycaemic and normoinsulinaemic. Microscopically, pancreatic tissue was hyperplastic with an irregular lobular arrangement of pancreatic islets.

1. A patient with complete ischaemia of the muscles of the calf and anterior compartment of the leg is described. 2. In diagnosis, tenseness of the calf, equinus and pain on attempted dorsiflexion of the ankle are most important. 3. Peripheral pulses may be present and do not contra-indicate decompression by operation to prevent ischaemia.

A large mass was found in the incisor region of the mandible in an 8-hour-old female calf. It had papillary projections and infiltrating anastomosing cords and islands of oral epithelium with a peripheral row of columnar cells. There was excessive keratinization on the surface as well as in the center of cords.
