Dairy farm management factors associated with clinical observations in young dairy calves sold at auction markets in Québec, Canada: A cross-sectional study

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science
: In Québec, Canada, nonreplacement calves are generally sent at a young age to auction markets to be sold for veal or dairy beef production. Various clinical observations found during the calves' journey, either at an auction market or on arrival at a ...

The Bos taurus maternal microbiome: Role in determining the progeny early-life upper respiratory tract microbiome and health.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Natural transference of maternal microbes to the neonate, especially at birth via the vaginal canal, has recently been recognized in humans and cows; however, its microbial influence on calf health has not yet been documented.

Protocol for a Scoping/Systematic Review: Scoping Review of Vaccination for the Prevention of Calf Scours in Cow-Calf Operations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background: The use of antimicrobials in the livestock industry has been a topic of increasing concern in the last  few years. Calf scours is one of the main causes of mortality among calves younger than 1 month and affects the development of the animal,

Ce‐Doped Lignin‐Based Nanozyme with Heat‐Activated Hydrolase Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A novel Ce‐doped lignin‐based hydrolase nanozyme (Ce‐AL) is synthesized using Ce ions coordinated with aminated industrial lignin. The Ce‐AL effectively hydrolyzes phosphate ester bonds and protein amide bonds, maintain high activity at 100°C, and successfully fights bacteria biofilms.

Dairy Cattle Infection with Bovine Rotavirus at Different Growth Stages and Its Impact on Health and Productivity

open access: yesAnimals
This study evaluated the prevalence of BRV infection and its impact on the health of dairy cows at different growth stages, with a particular focus on milk-fed calves. BRV was detected in rectal swabs via RT–qPCR.

Cross‐Platform Biosensing of Immune Receptors Using Peptide‐Functionalized Graphene

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A peptide‐functionalized graphene biosensor enables sensitive and selective detection of living immune cells. Targeting Formyl‐Peptide Receptor 2 (FPR2), the assay is demonstrated on model cells and primary human neutrophils. The same assay is applied to two complementary platforms: graphene‐enhanced surface plasmon resonance for optical benchmarking ...

Trait development and genetic parameters of resilience indicators based on variability in milk consumption recorded by automated milk feeders in North American Holstein calves

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science
: The implementation of automated milk feeders (AMF) on precision dairy farms has enabled efficient management of large numbers of group-housed replacement calves with reduced labor requirements and improved calf welfare.

Selenoprotein H Functions as a PPARα Coactivator to Link Selenium Homeostasis to Hepatic Lipid Metabolism and Protect against Steatohepatitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Our study identifies selenium deficiency as a hallmark of MASH pathogenesis. Dietary selenium supplementation enhances hepatic fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and attenuates MASH progression by activating the PPARα pathway via selenoprotein H (SELENOH). This selenium‐SELENOH‐PPARα nexus redefines the functional scope of selenoproteins, moving from redox ...
