Carbon‐Based Nanomaterials for Antiviral Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 34, Issue 38, September 18, 2024.
Carbon‐based nanomaterials (CBNs), including fullerenes, carbon dots, graphene, and their derivatives, show promise as antiviral tools in the antimicrobial resistance era. They exhibit broad‐spectrum antiviral activity with a low risk of resistance development. CBNs also enhance efficacy under light exposure and support antiviral immune responses. CBNs

Sapovirus Outbreaks in Long-Term Care Facilities, Oregon and Minnesota, USA, 2002–2009

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2012
We tested fecal samples from 93 norovirus-negative gastroenteritis outbreaks; 21 outbreaks were caused by sapovirus. Of these, 71% were caused by sapovirus genogroup IV and 66% occurred in long-term care facilities.

RHDV2 outbreak reduces survival and juvenile recruitment, causing European rabbit population collapse

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 15, Issue 9, September 2024.
Abstract Infectious diseases can cause considerable mortality in vertebrate populations, especially when a new pathogen emerges. Quantifying the impact of diseases on wild populations and dissecting the underlying mechanisms requires longitudinal individual monitoring combining demographic and epidemiologic data.

Human Norovirus in Artificial and Environmental Marine Water: Development of Antibody Based Rapid Methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Norovirus (NoV) is the principal cause of viral gastroenteritis in the United States. It has been linked to filter-feeding molluscan shellfish, that bioaccumulate the virus from contaminated surrounding waters.

How do infectious diseases affect high‐performance athletes? Norovirus during the Lima 2019 Pan American Games

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2024.
Abstract Background and Aims The incidence of infectious diseases among athletes during international competitions is a concern for public health. In this study, we aim to report six cases of norovirus‐associated gastroenteritis among athletes in Lima 2019 Pan American Games, a multisport event held in Peru.

Development of a reverse transcriptase digital droplet polymerase chain reaction‐based approach for SARS‐CoV‐2 variant surveillance in wastewater

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 96, Issue 3, March 2024.
Novel RT‐ddPCR methods are validated for the detection and quantification of SARS‐CoV‐2 variants for the wastewater surveillance. This adaptable approach aids in real‐time monitoring, crucial for rapid response to emerging infectious diseases and informing public health decisions.

The pathogenicity comparison of Lagovirus europaeus GI.1 and GI.2 strains in China by using relative quantitative assay

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Lagovirus europaeus GI.1 belongs to Lagovirus in the Caliciviridae family. GI.1 causes an acute, septic, and highly lethal disease in rabbits. Lagovirus europaeus GI.2, a new variant of GI.1, has caused explosive mortality in rabbits of all ages in ...

Pandemic preparedness: On the efficacy of non‐pharmaceutical interventions in COVID‐19 and about approaches to predict future pandemic viruses

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2024.
Abstract With three major viral pandemics over the last 100 years, namely the Spanish flu, AIDS and COVID‐19 each claiming many millions of lives, pandemic preparedness has become an important issue for public health. The economic, social and political consequences of the upheaval caused by such pandemics also represent a major challenge for ...
