Berries and bullets: influence of food and mortality risk on grizzly bears in British Columbia Bayas y balas: influencia de la alimentación y el riesgo de mortalidad en los osos grizzly en la Columbia Británica Des baies et des balles: influence de l'alimentation et risques de mortalité chez les ours grizzlys de la Colombie‐Britannique

open access: yesWildlife Monographs, Volume 213, Issue 1, November 2023., 2023
We developed a spatialized surface for the primary food of grizzly bears in southeast British Columbia. After using this huckleberry patch layer to model habitat selection, fitness, and density, in a bottom‐up top‐down paradigm, we found that huckleberry patches near forestry roads contribute very little to fitness and density.

Influence of landfill use on nest‐site selection and breeding success in white storks

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 321, Issue 3, Page 175-187, November 2023., 2023
Breeding near landfills may determine habitat preference and selection in white storks, however breeding success depends on habitat quality in the surrounding area more than the distance to the landfill. Abstract Landscape transformation by humans through habitat degradation, agriculture intensification and urbanization results in the loss of natural ...

Systematic review of conservation interventions to promote voluntary behavior change

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 1, February 2023., 2023
Abstract Understanding human behavior is vital to developing interventions that effectively lead to proenvironmental behavior change, whether the focus is at the individual or societal level. However, interventions in many fields have historically lacked robust forms of evaluation, which makes it hard to be confident that these conservation ...

Targeting the source of fine sediment and associated geochemical elements by using novel fingerprinting methods in proglacial tropical highlands (Cordillera Blanca, Perú)

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 36, Issue 8, August 2022., 2022
To identify the provenance of sediments in sediment mixtures collected in the proglacial area of Parón Lake we sampled main glacial landforms and apply innovative methods for guiding the selection of conservative and consensual tracers for unmixing.

Nocturnal dissolved organic matter release by turf algae and its role in the microbialization of reefs

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 36, Issue 8, Page 2104-2118, August 2022., 2022
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The increased release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by algae has been associated with the fast but inefficient growth of opportunistic microbial pathogens and the ongoing degradation of coral reefs.

Soluciones relacionadas con el entorno alimentario para prevenir la obesidad infantil en América Latina y en la población latina que vive en Estados Unidos

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 22, Issue S5, Octubre 2021., 2021

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 22, Issue S5, Octubre 2021., 2021

Evaluating composted sewage sludge as a phosphorus fertilizer in wheat grown on soils with different properties. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Environ Qual
Abstract Urbanization generates significant amounts of sewage sludge (SS), with relatively high concentrations of plant nutrients such as phosphorus (P). When biochemically stabilized by composting, SS (composted sewage sludge [CSW]) can serve as a sustainable P source in agriculture, supporting a circular economy and reducing agriculture's dependence ...

Seasonal dietary niche contraction in coexisting Neotropical frugivorous bats (Stenodermatinae)

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 52, Issue 4, Page 749-757, July 2020., 2020
Abstract Tropical dry forests are characterized by punctuated seasonal precipitation patterns that drive primary production and the availability of fruits, seeds, flowers, and insects throughout the year. In environments in which the quantity and quality of food resources varies seasonally, consumers should adjust their foraging behavior to maximize ...

Taxing Flaring and the Politics of State Methane Release Policy

open access: yesReview of Policy Research, Volume 37, Issue 1, Page 6-38, January 2020., 2020
Abstract Methane is a potent greenhouse gas but it has received strikingly less social science attention than carbon dioxide in examining climate policy options. This article explores American state policy toward methane that is not captured and instead released into the atmosphere during oil and gas production.
