WE wish to report extraordinary concentrations of DDT residues* in California sea lions, Zalophus californianus, which inhabit year round the coastal waters of California and Baja California, Mexico1. These waters receive agricultural runoff from California valleys where DDT has been used extensively2–4, and where residues have been increasing in the ...

Heartworms in Captive California Sea Lions
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1973SUMMARY Filarial worms identified as Dirofilaria imrnitis were found in the hearts of 3 captive California sea lions (Zalophus c. calif or nianus), that had been in Florida for more than a year. Gross and histopathologic findings comparable to those seen in canine heartworm disease were observed in 1 of the sea lions.

Acute Viral Hepatitis in California Sea Lions
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1979SUMMARY Acute viral hepatitis was diagnosed in five California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) stranded along the Los Angeles coast. Light microscopy revealed large nuclear inclusion bodies in hepatocytes. Electron microscopy provided evidence that these inclusion bodies were composed of adenovirus-like virions.

PREMATURE PARTURITION IN THE CALIFORNIA SEA LION
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1976Twenty percent of the California sea lion pups born on San Miguel Island die due to premature parturition. Specimens collected from premature-partus animals resulted in recovery of a virus, San Miguel Sea Lion Virus, indistinguishable from Vesicular Exanthema of Swine Virus, and Leptospira pomona from some of the premature cows and pups. The age range

Edema Disease in a California Sea Lion
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1980SUMMARY Edema disease, similar to that occurring in swine, was diagnosed in a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). The prominent features included a thickened, edematous stomach wall and generalized fibrinoid necrosis of arterioles. A beta-hemolytic Escherichia coli, serotype 0147:Κ•:Η52, was the predominant organism isolated from the ...

We investigate the phylogeography of California (Zalophus californianus) and Galapagos (Z. wollebaeki) sea lions and describe within-population structure for the California sea lion based on mitochondrial DNA. Fifty control-region haplotypes were found, 41 from Z. californianus and 9 from Z.

Zalophus californianus (California sea lion)
1975Skin biopsies of the male come from the San Diego Zoo, and that of the female, from the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, Illinois, USA. A male karyotype with identical findings was made available by Drs. R. L. Snyder and D. A. Hungerford as well. The female karyotype is prepared with G-banding and displays bands in the X essentially similar to most mammals.
