This work presents a portable optical meter for noncontact thickness measurement. The device shines a focused laser light on a thin and transparent sample, resulting in an interference between light reflecting from the top and from the bottom surface, and the interfering pattern is recorded by a linear sensor array before data ...

dynamic caliper matching [PDF]
Matched sampling is a methodology used to estimate treatment effects. A caliper mechanism is used to achieve better similarity among matched pairs. We investigate finite sample properties of matching with caliper and propose a slight modification to the existing mechanism.

Generating realistic and responsive traffic that reflects different network conditions is a challenging problem associated with performing valid experiments in network testbeds. In this work, we preset Caliper, a highly precise traffic generation tool, built on NetThreads, a flexible platform that we have created for developing packet processing ...

Abstract A new electronic caliper of unique design is described. The determination of the timing intervals is accomplished by digital means providing an accuracy dependent only upon a single crystal-controlled oscillator. Means has also been provided for varying the display to match different assumed sonic velocities without impairment of accuracy ...

While athletes are routinely assessed for changes in subcutaneous adipose tissue with skinfold calipers, absolute dynamic calibration of caliper jaw compression is currently not possible. The first part of this study describes how dynamic compression of foam rubber blocks can be used to monitor the relative calibration of a single pair of calipers as ...

A unique sensing system utilizing an ultrasonic transducer for measuring tree trunk diameters is described. The transducer with supporting electronic circuitry detected changes as small as 2.5 mm (0.1 in.). Diameters of circular objects were calculated using the time interval for sound waves to travel from the transducer to the object and back to the ...

Accurate measurement from the line of insertion of any rectus muscle to the point on the sclera where it is desired to recede or advance that muscle is necessary. For this purpose a number of calipers have been designed. I have not been satisfied with any so far placed on the market.

A new caliper: Uses in surgery
The American Journal of Surgery, 1979Abstract A versatile new caliper was developed to obtain precise measurements during surgery. The small, sturdy caliper will not damage delicate tissues, and its long arms allow ready manipulation within confined surgical fields.
