Cutaneous myiasis in cats and dogs: Cases, predisposing conditions and risk factors

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, 2021
Two cases of cutaneous myiasis diagnosed in 2018 in Emilia‐Romagna region (northern Italy) were reported. The first one, described in a domestic cat Felis silvestris catus L. (Carnivora: Felidae) and caused by Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy (Diptera:

Beyond birds: rethinking bird‐centered pathogen models in light of insect migration

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 6, June 2026.
Migration redistributes biomass, nutrients, and pathogens across ecosystems. For decades, migratory birds have been treated as the default long‐distance pathogen vectors, shaping both conceptual frameworks and empirical models of disease ecology.

Temperature requirements for the growth of immature stages of blowflies species, Chrysomya albiceps and Calliphora vicina, (Diptera:Calliphoridae) under laboratory conditions

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Forensic Sciences, 2018
Background In forensic entomology, a way to estimate Post Mortem Interval (PMI) is to use development data of the first colonizing insects on a dead body.

Spectral Characterization of the Life Stages and Physiological Responses of Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Larvae Parasitized by Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 5, Page 436-452, May 2026.
Hyperspectral proximal sensing was used to characterize the life stages and physiological responses of Diatraea saccharalis and to detect parasitism by Cotesia flavipes. Distinct spectral signatures differentiated eggs, larval instars, pupae, and adults, as well as live, dead, and parasitized larvae.

The use of mitochondrial Cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI) to differentiate two UK blowfly species – Calliphora vicina and Calliphora vomitoria

open access: yes, 2006
Traditionally identification of forensically important insects has been carried out based upon morphological differences between species. However insect evidence found at a crime scene may on occasion be difficult to distinguish by morphological ...

Year‐round pollinator visitation of ornamental plants in Mediterranean urban parks

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 19, Issue 3, Page 702-715, May 2026.
Pollinators visiting ornamental plants in urban parks remained diverse throughout the year. They were represented by wild bees (42%), honeybees (37%), flies (18%), butterflies (2%) and beetles (1%). Both native and non‐native plants attracted pollinators.

Descripción de las larvas II, III y el pupario de Compsomyiops fulvicrura (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Description of the larvae II, III, and the puparium of Compsomyiops fulvicrura (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

Necrophagous Insects and Internal Temperature Synergistically Determine Duration of the Decomposition Process for Deer Carcasses When Vertebrate Scavengers are Excluded

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
Predicted survival curves from the accelerated failure time (AFT) model showing the probability that deer carcass weight remains above 30% of its initial value over time. Curves represent predictions at −1 SD, mean, and + 1 SD of each covariate (initial body weight, average air temperature, and duration until the first peak in internal carcass ...

Anoxia Tolerance in Four Forensically Important Calliphorid Species

open access: yesForensic Sciences, 2022
Forensically important blow flies, Diptera: Calliphoridae, are among the first organisms to colonize carrion. After eggs hatch, the larvae of most blow fly species feed in an aggregation or “mass”.
